In your picture Jake: If it was around New Britain Island then this would be Uluwin, although I think she's much taller than this one. This could be the one near Madang?...Dad says it looks like Manam or Kakar Island. Both islands, one is active the other dead.
Rabaul Town is about 1.5ks from an active volcano. Been throwing out about 500 tonnes of ash a day on Rabaul Town alone. But yeah if you look for New Britain island on the map you'll see where I am. The nearest town is Kokopo which is where all the big business is now because rabaul was demolished in the 1994 Eruption.
Here is a pic of Rabaul (I hope it shows). My workshop is just behind the first two fronds of the plant in the foreground. That's Kokopo in the background.

Now that is bloody close mate! You can sit a few hundred metres from the volcano, we go down there every now and then for a beer and a story, there is a very hot political situation going on trying to shut Rabaul down, as with anything in Papua New Guinea, there is always a hidden agenda: Land, Money, Kill the competition etc. We are one of only a few businesses left over after the eruption trying to keep everything we own.
