Repeat the first word, ...COMPULSORY. You cannot get a car registered in NSW without it. It remains in effect during the time that the car is registered & expires at the same instant as the registration does.
I suspect that you mean 'Third Party Property Damage' insurance which should be an absolute must for everyone who does not have comprehensive insurance on their car.
You are entitled to know the drivers details & the name of his insurer. If he says he doesn't have one, then let him know that he will be hearing from your solicitor/lawyer & you will see him in court. [It's only a little lie] Let him know that when he looses, he will personally pay for your car & your legal costs.
When you call the cops ask if he was breath tested because you think he was intoxicated. Even if that's a fib too but it strengthens your case, after all, he fled the scene, not you & he must have had a reason to not want to face a breath test.
