I do UNHOLY things to my rebuilt 63A dogleg 5spd, and it absolutely LOVES it. They aren't meant to be as strong as the Toyota boxes, But the way mine laps up the PUNISHMENT it's hard to imagine it ever failing. When I took my mate for a ride yesterday, the very first thing he said was, "What gearbox are you runing?" after I hammered 2nd. The way I (mis)treat it often raises an eyebrow from my mates, which always makes me lol. Mechanical sympathy is for women and old people

Remember boys play nice I personally remember my friend adam had a 1200 sedan 14 turbo etc it ran low 12's at eastern creek but spat out boxes can't beat launching on slicks used to pull the wheels quite impressivley, it is quite easy for a "good " engine to run like #### if it is not tuned properly cam timing , jetting , timing etc , there are plenty of tuff A series motors out there I also remember a Blue 1200 coupe that was in hot 4's magazine 1608 cc A15 webers etc ran 13.7 in full street trim it is all about power to weight gearing etc and knowing how to drive ie anyone can sidestep the clutch but it don't get you anywhere fast . Some cars are built for a purpose the ultimate would be an overbored/ stroked A series for capacity to about 2 litres a nice turbo , then it would have good chassis balance , but getting a gearbox to hold up to it is another world of problems as my old coupe with mild A15 went through 4 stock boxes and 3 toyota t series boxes , AH but i was young and loved dumping the clutch. The CA is better than SR anyway due to superior rocker can't beat cam over bucket verses ####ty rockers , Cast block verses alloy stronger again there is no real weight benefit as the engine is larger , harder to fit nothing a grinder won't fix but you can't beat cubic inches give me a 2.2 litre CA I say . Enough of this rambling see get me thinking and I start typing crap

lagwagon i have ridden and driven an sr20 ute yes it goes good yes it goes sideways easily enough but i own a 1000 you cant swap an sr20 into or a ca18det so i stick with what i got and build it to make more power then most street legal sr or ca 1200s plus being a smalller motor will have less torque so will be a little bit more freindly on the 1000 chassis and wont break traction as easily
if its a street 1000 keep it a series

That will be even more reinforced after a ride in my car Nick. I took Mark and John for a blast yesterday after the drags. I think they were suitablely impressed for a motor running 7psi.

Oh just the usual stuff :

Rebore , balance ,forged pistons ,some aftermarket rods , solid cam setup adjustable cam gears , Arp bolts , ported head , and the biggest Mutha F*&%$er of a turbo you can afford .

Nick.

Such as?
I'm going to build a CA18det I scored for a box of bourbon and cola cans. So Any and all tips are welcome.

I've had both, a ca18det 1200 and a sr20det 1600 (how common!) and both engines are good.

CA's are cheap - i bought mine for $500 with everything but it had a spun bearing. Once rebuild it handled all i gave it with ease. cast iron block and far superior valve actuation in the head make it a great little motor. there are a few things that you should do when rebuilding them and they will give you no worries. They are harder to make big power out of though and aftermarket goodies are harder to get.

SR's are good because they have bags more torque than a ca, aftermarket bits are a dime a dozen - forged pistons, cams etc but they have a bit of an average rocker arm setup and will be limited if chasing massive power by the alloy block but can make an easy 250+ kw on a standard bottom end.

Anyone who hates either in an datsun and only has eyes for the a series has usually not ridden in a datsun powered by them. In saying that, an a series that is built using the money you'd save from buying a later model motor would go fairly nicely.

personally i have love for all mentioned engines
