as i said in my last post you don't have to dish the pistons, in my turbo set-up i have just used a decompression plate and the head has been so the compression ratio drops a little more. i have heard of people running a stock standard engine with a turbo, and it runs fine with a few modifacations.

forgies aren't needed, stock piston work well for boosted applications up to about 12psi.

yea pretty much just something fun to drive and plus it would be a good learning experience by building the motor ,
Wat do you reckon would happened if i didnt dish the pistons or decompress the motor serious issues ? not sure but do forgies drop the ratio

I have heard of people going with a turbo off a diesel, for the simple reason that they are designed to run hard all day every day, but they use different seals in the turbo.

As for pistons you can get them machined so theres a dish in them, rhis lowers the compression ratio, it looks like this-

You don't have to do that you can just use a decompression plate between the head gasket and the block.Standard piston are fine for a low boost set-up, 8-10 psi should be fine. there is about a million ways to do it just depends on your cashflow. What are your plans? just a hot streeter?

well, I was told by someone, in the know, that Langley turbo pistons are a straight swap.... it's not, they are too tall, 3mm in total, so I was stuck with them and had to make a plan, had 1mm chopped off the std A15 rods, and 2mm from the tops of the pistons, they where nicely dished to start with, so things actually worked out rather well in the end... I'm pushing the 290,000 Km mark here, and not a single glitch from her... lately though, I'm noticing a slight bit of smoke, when I lift throttles, figuring it to be the turbo's Turbine oil-seal that might be a tad bit on the going-out phase of it's life... these pistons are however more than capable of holding 15PSI all day long... as long as you keep detonation under control. For that I'm using a home made boost-regulating detonation detector.

Kool that looks good , ive made my decision i think im going with the gt1548 should be perfect and can get one for about 600 bucks new if its not right go bigger lol

Im going to be anoying and ask another question what piston are you guys running , would standard pistons with chrome rings be able to handle boost if so how much boost ?
Cheers

I'm running a GT1746(1749), like from a Merc 1.8Vito van. A beautiful little unit.

only mods required was to swop the vacuum actuaror on the waste-gate to a normal one that can sense boost... Good for 15psi from 2500RPM all the way through 7krpm into an A15.

Either way i think its a good choice and at least i can pump out some more psi from it
