Hi All,
Finally time for an update on my slow project. Geez, didn't quiet realise the effects of the GFC had hit so hard until lately. I used to be buying things for my ute every month or two and now I am struggling to get the basics to keep the project on track. Anyway I didn't come to post up about being poor from the global financial effects, I came to give an update.
Due to a stint in hospital for brain surgery things had started slowing down on the datto. Now fully recovered and ready to begin work again I started grinding down the diff brackets with my mate Steve. After getting both grinders going at it on one diff for 2hrs cutting off all unnecessary brackets we destroyed like 5 or 6 discs!! Chucked a bit of paint on the finished side and will grind down the rest this week, then off to get it cut down to size. I will post up some pics of this process. Once I get it back it will be cleaned up and off to get powdercoated. Then new rear shocks, reset the leaf springs. Acid/steam the calipers and mount the handbrake cable.

Thats it for now, it's good to be back.

Been alittle while but time for an update. Grinding off all the brackets that come on the R31 diff was a bit of a mission, went through about 3 or 4 cutting blades and 2 or 3 grinding blades. Anyway got it looking good for the cut down which is happening now, should get it back in a week or so. Then I'll take it to get the internals overhauled and reco'd if needed, better doing it now than 2 weeks after the first burn out. After that it's off to the powdercoater. Need to also get my hands on some handbrake cables/brackets as well. Spent sometime cleaning up the garage and now have the CA up on the engine stand in early stages of stripping it down for its rebuild. With such a tight space it is getting more and more important to be organised - well alittle bit organised. Splashed out and got myself a nice new set of sidchrome sockets!!
Just focusing on getting the drive line and brakes all sorted then I will be getting stuck into the engine. Only put 6 months of rego on the ute for now to see if I will take it off the road in FEB to complete the transplant - we will see. I will also have to start getting stuck into some body work as the rust just seems to get bigger and worse by the day! Real shame about the Datto's!
Posting up pics will come. Eventually.

Some pics. Had planned to just get down in the garage and take out the R/H side quarter window to replace it and ended up destroying the brittle rubber surround. - also discovered how the guy before me got 6x9's in the doors - very dodgy job, looks like he might of used a already rusted piece of tin to screw to the door!!?!?! fingers crossed the other door isn't like this. Wanted to get down and finally get some rust converter on the door frame drivers side - ended up attacking it with the grinder and will weld some new piece in in a couple of weeks. On that note does anyone know the standard gauge for 1200 metal???
Took some pics of the garage so you can get a feel for the space - well lack of.

Stripping down the CA, slowly. Can't wait for my diff to come back (shortened). Got my hands on a new bumper thanks to Benny (12oo.com) also a 120y sway bar from Graham (hope you found the money I left) any way that is the update - about time huh! That's me in the ghey self portrait in the wife beater! (camera shy) - just to get an idea of how tight the space is - I'm pretty good at Tetris too.

Can anyone advise what gauge of steel to use for welding to the 12oo's body?

hows a tail bloke like your self fit in the cab with those monza seat, bloody legs must be up around your ears,
i think its 0.6 or 0.8mm thick

Thanks for the reply on the gauge. yeah the bloody Monza seats aren't that great considering I don't fit in them - I don't have very big shoulders but I can't fit in them at all - must be built for small italian race drivers or something. I will be taking them out once I put the new engine and s13 box in as with these seats I wont be able to reach the shifter! Standard seats are in pretty good nick, helps give that sleeper look even more.

.6-.8 is too thin. I've used 1.0mm for most my panel repairs but 1.2mm is fine too.
