As the subject says.
I want to drain my steering box oil and put in some fresh oil as it was never ever replaced.
Can anyone give tips to do this without removing the steering column/unit.
Is it needed at certain service intervals?

Steering box oil shouldn't need changing unless its been contaminated.

All that is normally required is for it to be topped up.

But if your like me and want to change it because it's 30 something years old then you might want to do what i did. I simply used a long piece or rubber tube and sucked the old oil out. Alternatively, you can use a small fluid pump if you have one.

i hope this helps

Thanks.
How much did you manage to remove?
Was it at least most of the oil?
What oil can I use. I am thinking in the direction of motorcycle fork oil. Just afraid of using the wrong oil and then causing damage to the steering box.

the book I have says it shold take 0.23L (0.4 Pints) from empty of SAE 10.

I'd be inclined to put something slightly heavier in if you live in a warmer cliamte though.

I have motorcycle fork oil from my motorcycle days.
It is 15W in weight.
Will this do?
I think so.

Well for a 120y, which uses a very similar steering box to a datsun 1200, the manual says 90EP @0.25 litres.

The 120y manual says to use 90EP for the transmission, rear axle and steering box.
If you buy 2.5 litres of oil you can replace the whole lot!

Remember that the oil in the steering box is only there to lubricate the worm gear but if you use to thin it can cause premature wear and oil may leak through the bottom oil seal.

Try not to over fill it like i did either.

I managed to drain mine all over the floor of my ute [through the end of the steering column] when changing the steering column/box assembly... Still stinks 4 months later.
For oil I just used a 80/90w gear oil, the same as is used in the trans and diff.
