Blue smoke is bad = rings as mentioned Black smoke is running rich = tuning problem White smoke is sometime stem if its cold at startup.
from what you say i think that a rebuild is in order, as for engine changes R4000 isnt much really for an engine that is decent, though if you know the right peope you could possible buy the parts required for the rebuild with that much.

The smoke being emitted is a blue/white smoke, not a balck smoke that I have heard can be a bit of a problem. The noises from the engine is almost a sort of rasping noise, until I ease back slightly on the throttle and it seems to disappear. But obviously, by doing this, no acceleration is taking place! It's almost as if some of the power is being bled off elsewhere, with the engine not responding to the amount of throttle being applied.
As for my budget, I'd be looking to purchase an engine for approximately R4000, and I have a friend who would be able to install the engine for me. I would ideally like to purchase a 1.6 engine, and would value your ideas on such a thing.
Thanks

Hi stratts
Which color is your smoke ? if it is dark Black you can recover it by putting a new air cleaner, spark plugs and carburetor tuning, if it is whity black smoke , probably you may have worn engine components like piston rings bearing etc
thanks regards sumith

Can you give a little more detail on the smoke? colour, density... are there any noises emitting from the engine that sound abnormal?... if so what are they. the more info the better, as nobody can give you an answer on what you have discribed.
also 120y's (sorry to the 120y fellows) were synonymous whith being the slowest car ever made.
as for engine convesions, what is your budget and what are you looking to achieve?

Hi guys
I am currently restoring an old 120Y, and I have a couple of questions that I am hoping you can answer for me.
When I accelerate the car, there is a lot of smoke generating out of the exhaust pipe, and I cannot seem to find the cause of this. Any ideas?
Also, what would be a good engine to place into the 120Y? I currently have a Nissan 1200 engine, but I am looking for something with a bit more power if possible, and maybe even ultimately converting to a 5 speed gearbox.
Last question is, there seems to be a distinct lack of acceleration in the engine, and it almost feels as though a lot of the power is being dissipated somewhere. I am being outdone by lorries sometimes, and I cannot find the source as to why there is such a lack of power coming from the car.
Any ideas?
Many thanks
Mark
