Hi guys Im in a bit of a catch 22 situation. My b110 sedan is still in standard trim like I got it 2 weeks ago. Now my orignal plan was to go A14, but know I can get my hands on a L16 motor, gearbox, diff and front suspension for the same amount that I would have spent on the A14. Now I know its not a complete straight fit but it also doesnt seem that hectic. O and all that l16 goods came out of a stanza. And just how good are the L motors? Btw Sadly L18 and L20 motors are very hard to find in SA. So what do you guys think?

Hi,

You can start by checking the Teck Wiki.

The L motors are superb motors, nearly the equal fo the the A-series but of course with more displacment.

They fit without having to cut the Datsun sheet metal. Use a stock Datsun 1200 automatic driveshaft with the L16 manual transmission.

The Datsun1200.com tech wiki has more information.

Awesome! good to see more people doing the "use what you got and make it fit" i'm in the final stages of my L20 swap that i hoped would take a month or so to throw together but has been 4 1/2 months,so i hope its not your daily drive. it took me 2 goes to get the xmember right but other than that it was pretty easy to custom make everything to fit. with the stanza front suspension make sure you grab all the lower control arms and tie bars and stuff and put it all in too. also the L engine has a lot more overhang in front of the front axle that will probably affect handling.Good luck !

The stanza engine has a front sump like A series if you have access to the stanza cross member remove the mounts by drilling out the spot welds. You can shave a bit off the edges of the mounts so as to clear the control arm bolts. You cant use stanza radius rods without extending the thread. you cant use stanza sway bar either. Stanza diff and tailshaft would need mods to fit.Try gettin a 120y diff and auto tail shaft or 1200 ute diff but you will need to mod tail shaft .

The L motors are practically indestructible (well within realistic sorts of limits, I'm not talking about a brick on the accelerator pedal). Definitely more power potential, as the heads will flow more (esp with extensive porting).

If I was going that way (and of course availability might vary massively compared to where I live!) I'd go for the larger L motors - since they wouldn't weigh drastically more than the smaller ones in the same family - might as well get the most capacity.

There's an interesting build on a local forum might be of some interest (TK is Tony Knight from Adelaide, who is a real talent, and good bloke, very generous with his time and info, with an enviable track record with his heads/engines in all manner of motorsport)

A big thanx to all so far! So L16 it will be Ill make sure to get all the stanza bits and pieces. The gearbox is stil the old 4 speed one but I dont think that wil bother me much. And what Im not goin to use Ill sell again to put towards a alfa lsd Im after. I think then it wil be all sideways from there on out!

pig dog, jump in and advise..

i have all the parts togeter and have option of having a l16 rebuilt(which i will put in eventually) but have been given a fully rebuilt stock l20 to use initially.
have a 5speed sss gbox and 3 4speeds as spares. Got a stanza tunnel to put in and already have a h150 120 y rear diff.

so you will need to convert to hydraulic clutch, get an auto 120y h150 tailshaft to match rear end, 200b speedo cable as should match speedo gear drive on speedo, think thatsmosy of it
