You want to make sure you have oil at the pickup all the time, the l-series sumps don't have really any baffling, then add some capacity as you'll loose some when fitting the l-series into the 1200 (use a stanza or bluebird sump)

Use L18 crank rods and pistons, Open up the oiling holes in the rod and main journals, dowel inbetween flywheel bolts, clean up rods and xray, balance whole rotating assem, arp rod bolts, arp mains, new 280zx head bolts, Definitely get a 280zx oil pump with comp springs (have part numbers at home), theres more when I have the time to sit and write it all, new nissan gasket set is a must.

Then you just need the induction to get it to 9000rpm...

Im using a rebuilt balanced L16 bottom end for now until I have enough money to build a better head and carbs combo, i think I'll be revving to 7500 max for now, my cam makes power from 4000-8000.

Sorry, bore the block to 85mm to get the pistons to fit and the rest will bolt in giving you 1794cc I think.

I just read that L18s are hard to come by in ZA so scrap that idea anyway. Stick with rebuilding a nice L16.

Is the motor from a stanza? They are a better motor the dip stick will miss the crossmember and 9mm rod bolts they are better newer castings, the early L16 I have has been repaired around one of the headbolts and has a crack above the welsch plug exhaust side.

O ok Lol no problem. At this stage Ill have to be happy with L16 crank because L18 has become a very hard item to find here by us. But the rest of the goodies I will make sure I do to make sure my datti holds up under a bit of right foot stress hehe!

As you know by now Im gathering parts and info for my build. Well it seems like my 1200 had its last drive as a 1200 the weekend! Next weekend the motor and gearbox is coming out so that the L motor fitting can start! Then once that is done the car would be taken appart to be made to look perfect or as close to perfect I can get it

I'm enjoying this topic alot. I just bought a 160 sss 4door today today, im getting it this week. But i have to assemble the L16 myself. My first time too! What should i look out for that might need replacing? Appart maybe from seals rings and gaskets. Also wich radiators will fit the car?

Check the guides cam chain oil pump and so on. The L part are so cheap here that you might as well do the whole motor. Good luck with the new datto enjoy it!
