Yeah it was good to see a bunch of dattos on the road, Unfortunately I had to turn back at that petrol station that we stopped at. My webers started playing silly buggers, when I back
off the accelerator the revs 'linger' , then it wont idle properly.. The front 2 spark plugs are nice reddish-brown, and the rear 2 are sooty, so I suspect they are way out of sync.
Theres probably an air leak somewhere too, causing the weak idle. Gotta scrape some money together and get a pro to tune it..

Sounds like you guys had a HOOT on the cruise (except you, twitch.) How many Datsuns were on the run? As far as I know, I am the only 1200 in the state of Tennessee. There was another one
here in Good Old Knocksville that was a racer but the guy sold it to someone out of state. If I go on a cruise, I have to go alone. Hell, even a 249Z is a rarity here anymore. There are
280ZX's around but no small Z's, no old 510's but there are some old Datsun trucks around. It is a shame that around here, all of the best cars ever made (Datsuns) went the way of the
crushers. I would love to be able to go cruise with some more Datto 1200s.

Twitch, it sounds like a power valve or a jet has worked loose or something in the rear carb. You should buy a manual on the carbs rather than pay someone to fix them once. The manual will be
cheaper and you can get paid from others to fix theirs. Sooty spark plugs are a sign of being too RICH. An air leak will make it LEAN, which does not make soot. Brown on the plugs means that
it is running too high of octane. Very few people realize what OCTANE means and how to adjust octane for their compression. A LOT OF POWER (or potential power)IS LOST WITH TOO HIGH OF OCTANE
BUT TOO LOW OF OCTANE WILL KILL A MOTOR. Spark plugs should be light gray in color for optimun performance.

Unfortunately, a bucks (stag) night, the night before and fathers day commitments meant
I couldn't turn up.

I will definitely be turning up when my machine is completed. It's good it was a
success.

Webers are EASY to tune. Depending on how close the jets are to being correctly sized. Getting the 2 in balance can be a little hard, but generally using a strategic piece of garden hose,
listening for the flow noise into each of the chokes will give you an idea of tune. Webers, like all carbies can get a buildup of oxide inside of them if water has made it's way into the
carbies, and the float levels also can get out of hand if the needle and seats are worn. So if you pull them apart and give them a good cleanup, being careful not to damage the gaskets,
you could give them a bit of a cleanup. Be sure to seal it back up with gasket glue. Are you using a hard gasket, or the rubber o-ring type?
We found that the o-ring type is difficult to torque up and it would leak when the engine was cold. This was on a twin 48DCOE equipped L20B (2.4L) engine from my brothers first 510.
Again the garden hose can be used to listen for intake gasket leaks. Unfortunately my dad gave away all of his weber books and tuning tool thing, we are a injection/turbo only family these
days.

As for tuning, you need to make sure that both carbies are the same. Maybe they are jetted differently?

nah not yet. i have bought complete second motor that i'm going to swap over at some stage so i can pull my motor apart and rebuild it. so the quads will go on with that motor i think. i
got a quote on parts and machining but i'll leave that figure to your imagination. i ended up getting a centre console and an under dash tray. cost me nothin. i'm not telling where i got it
from. coz he's got about another 6 consoles there. yeah you missed out on a good day. ah well next time hey.
