of course you can cut em down. But its not much.
Think you may need a new prop shaft as well.

I wanted to keep it light, thats why I was leanning towards the 1200 ute diff but hate the idea of finding wheels to compensate the increased track. Can you cut these diffs down?

D you are right about weight. Yeah the BW is a heavy bugger for the datsun, and sure there are plenty of other options, but it all comes down to cost i spose. The winters units require you to sell a kidney, and alfa stuff is (i am under the impressions from an alfa mate) hard to track down cheaply, but I could be wrong on that front.
I considered the H150/H190, but they didnt come in an LSD option commonly, and after some ringing around in Perth I didnt find any that were usable. It sems that the only H190s I could find were from the 720 and they didnt look flash. the BW despite its weight wins on all the other fronts in my opinion.
All up my BW cost me $300 for the diff, $750 to modify to suit, and $350 for a rebuild. so $1400 for a new LSD 3.9 ratio cut to suit and unkillable, if a little heavy.

I have to disagree, Id rather something light weight and available and although the BW are common and avail with many ratios they are a heavy bugger defeating the reason to own the lightest datsuns mass produced. I consider the B series a unique and important collectable and if you can spend some money on this part of the build to compliment its lightweight. I suggest an all alloy h190, modified h150 (usually strong enough for good drivers), Alfa Romeo 105 (3.4, 3.6, 4.11, 4.3, 4.5 ratios avail) or a second hand Winters or other similar quickchange for hotrods. Gav since you are running one of the lightest engines ever made for cars then please consider keeping the rest of that blue coupe featherweight.

Im with you Dattoman, I am using a r31 skyline diff 28 spline unit. 3.9 LSD for me though. Yeah it may be overkill, but it wont break either like you said. It would have to be the biggest Diff you should consider for any datsun with almost any engine/gearbox combo.
Pretty much everything needs to be modified to fit, so just pick something cheap. That was my theory anyways.

gav i have a 1200 ute diff with bluebird discs should go in under a coupe easy as they have a heap more space then the other models. i did move the mounts but was out by about 5mm ... bugger..... but they can be cut and moved again sure matt could do it for you if your intrested? its all together complete center has been welded (locked) so it would probably be adviseable to get another centre for the street

I've used a H165 ute diff in a 1000,the mounts had to be moved in about 50 mm each side. I used front wheel drive offset wheels & the wheel was common enough that I was able to get rear wheel drive offset wheels for the front. The later wheels to suit bluebirds or pintaras are pretty neutral,so you could probably use them.
