The Datsun 310 '78,'79,'80 was front wheel drive in Canada & US (possibly other countries too) The 310 used a tranversed mount setup (a transaxle)with an A14 or A15 engine. There are some differences in the head & block castings to accommodate different starter/ alternater & motor mounts. My friend tried using a FWD A-series engine in his 1200 & found it not possible without extensive mods. I would immagine the same would be true when trying to fit a RWD A-series engine to a FWD setup. You would need to find the engine & transaxle together. What car do you need this for?

Thanks for your reply. This is for a Peugeot 205 ge 1000cc. The engine and transmission need a major overaul. I already had the A15, dual S.U's and the intake manifold, all in good condition so this seemed the perfect choice. All I need is the transmission and drive shafts, but what you are saying is that this is more trouble than profit. I think however, that I will have a look at the 310 and see what can be done, unless somebody has a good xu5 or xu9 motor and box for sale reasonably. In the mean time any suggestions are welcomed.

The main advantage of FWD is that everthing is in a nice little package. The disadvantage of FWD is that everthing is in a nice little package - you can't modify onepart without upsetting something else. Changing RWD drive engines is easy because apart from mounts and making sure the gearbox lines up and other simple obvious stuff (like does the bonnet shut). Changing FWD also means that the engine mounting position radically changes the suspension and steering becuase they are all tied together. FWD engines should only be swapped with a close family relative. But if you are still keen, take some cardboard and cut it to the shape of the gearbox end of the A15 block. Also cut out the gearbox mounting holes, starter motor holes and the position of the crank centre. Mark each side as engine and gearbox. Take the cardboard cut out to your local wrecker and ask for a Datsun/Nissan FWD gearbox to fit. Getting the Pug front wheel halfshafts to fit the gearbox will probably kill you though. :) Pulsars were FWD in Australia. - Wayne S.
