Just bought a nice low mile H/B that runs excellent and nice interior. I want to restore this and paint it.

Two problems

1)Temp and Fuel gauges read incorrectly.

I grounded the Temp lead to only register about half of gauge. I suspect a problem outside of the sending units. Any ideas?

2)Rust holes around bottom of doors and F&R fenders.

I have two good doors and both front fenders in great shape but in a different color, should I use them or repair original body panels? - How should I go about repairing rust holes around rear wheel wales?

Welcome to the land of A-series/Sunny/ 110,210,310 Datsuns

OK first I'll nag before anyone else does: tell us where you are, folks on here hail from almost every continent. You say B210 vs 120Y so you're most likely in the USA but it qould be good to know.

As for the rust and how to repair it........properly, which means knowing how to do metal work. If you're doing rust repair you'll need to have the car resprayed, so you might as well use the good but different color fenders. Do a search, one of the gang did some exstensive rust repair on his car complete with loads of pictures. It's pretty basic really you need to cut out the bad and replace it with new pieces, as some of the panels are hard to get that means fabricating parts.

On the up side you'll have loads of fun with the car, Datsuns are very addicting.........other than a mark tendency to rust they are very very sturdy. Of course some of us (me) live in the desert so it's not an issue,

Tom

I am in the North West area of the US. This is probably my 10th B210, the first being my first car of my purchase at 18. I have been following this forum for a while now and have an imense respect for the knowledge and know how shown here. I am very serious about bringing this particular B210 to show quality. That is why I hesitate to replace any original parts if they can be brought back to original look and quality. As stated I value all of your opinions and will post pictures of vehicle asap.

When both Temp and Fuel gauges read funny it is probably the "Instrument voltage regulator". Only those two gauges use it. It is inside the gauge assembly.

If I was you I'd try to keep the original panels on the car as they always fit better and line up properly. I have different doors, front panels, bonnet and boot lid and nothing lines up as neat as original. It still cleaned up my car but has bigger gaps etc. I also have one in good condition and all original panels and its so much better, small gaps vs big and eregular ones. Nice 120y tho, I wanted to get a fast back and couldn't find one, but now I have 3 120y four doors sedans...

P.S. I also dislike the American bumpers, why did they do that?

B210 USA bumpers:
* 1974-1975 models had non-chrome (black or gray)
* 1976-1978 models had chrome bumpers
The bumpers were the same size.

1973, the Datsun 1200 in USA got stronger bumpers with extra large rubber bumpees.

For the B210, the monstrous park benk bumpers were used. Along with all other american cars.

The large bumpers were because of an american law passed to protect the people from high repair costs. People complained that small, low speed "fender benders" resulted in damages that cost a fortune to repair. So Congress listened to the people and the Cost Saving Act required no damage in a 5 mph crash. This was FMVSS 215b
Bumper Requirements

Unfortunately the bumper mandate was a failure... it did not reduce costs. But we got to enjoy them while it lasted.
