hi guys i was just hoping to gather some information about synchros on 60 seires gearbox's

My 2nd gear is a bit crunchy on the downshift, my mechanic said its the synchros and for now i can double declutch to get into second

This isnt very traffic friendly as sometimes its a bit slow

I was just wondering what it takes to replace synchros either if i do it myself,, or how much i should pay someone to do it , and how available synchros are for these gearbox,

Please remember i have never even thought about synchros and i have really no idea what they look like

i have been helped out very much with this whole manual thing up to now and am very thankful

Hopefuly this will be the last
Thanks alot
Jason

I just rebuilt my 60A 5 spd. & its a fair amount of work. I've rebuilt a few manual trannys in the past but its been many years prior to this one. I had to make a bracket to hold the trans center plate in the vice, very helpful, matter of fact it'd be much harder to do w/o being able to hold it in the vice.

See link below for Rivergate conversion, at the bottom of the page is a pdf for a 60A 5 spd., pretty helpful. If you take it that far apart you might consider replacing the bearings as well. Good luck.

http://www.rivergate5speed.com/desc_of_trans.html

If you search my posts I think there's some of my tranny rebuild.

ok mate i might browse that site for a little while

is it at all possible to change only the synchronisers
at this stage im not to keen on rebuilding the whole gearbox

just took it for another spin
and it seems as i can get into second when im doing a certain speed
but any faster and i have to double declutch/ shuffle

after doing some research on synchros its starting to make some sense

thanks for your reply
Jason

sometimes changing gearbox oil can help a lot,
there's a few specially for cold shift issues, and may keep you on the road for some time..

if u need to pullit apart enough to repalce the synchros u may as well do bearings at the same time, not much difference.

Having said that, I have seen one being rebuilt and I wouldnt try it myself if u havnt done one before, its too easy for everything to slide off the shafts and no idea how it all goes back on.

I found that Nulon gearbox treatment makes worn synchros even worse so dont try that hoping to fix it.

It is important NOT to use a diff oil in your gearbox, or multi purpose oil. What you need to run is a 75/85 front transaxle oil. It is possible to just replace a synchro but when you pull the box down that far there is only 3 bearings that you can replace anyway. The bearings will cost less than the synchro. $105 for the synchro available new from nissan. The box is a piece of piss to rebuild but I have done a few.
