definatly doesnt sound healthy mate, try pulling out the oil pressure switch and feeding oil in there, thats what we do at work if it wont build its own pressure under cranking. as for getting hot and running badly its not a good sign, what got done in the rebuild?

Make sure you dont start it again until you have found the cause.

Does it have oil
Is the oil pressure switch new/old/faulty
Does it have enough oil
Are you running a separate oil pressure gauge
Is the oil pump old/new/faulty

I know there is a tendency to want to keep cranking - dont!!

has oil, brand new switch, has pressuere gauge, brand new oil pump

So is the timing setup? That could explain the bad idle. Fire order? Vacuum hose connected from carb to distributor? Give a bit of understanding to the fact you have a ground cam so there might be some lump there.

You need to take your time and go over it slowly to check everything. If it got hot quick then there is a chance the coolant isn't circulating properly, check the water pump isn't cavitating. And check all pipes are clear not kinked.

Rezlo had an issue with his engine temperature sensor - it was meant for a different voltage or something and it was giving a faulty reading. Is this a possibility with yours?

As for the oil try your best not to push it. I did with an engine and the results were catastrophic - (spun a bearing - gouged crank journal). Check the level.

You might want to consider checking the pump, then the oil pickup and then if that is all clear you should check the oil galleys.

I can't give an answer on how soon you should see oil but looking at the layout of the pump they should work within seconds. Whatever you do do not push it, the amount of wear that goes on in an engine that isn't oiling properly is enormous.

I know there are some pretty basic questions there but sometimes people forget things when they are firing their new engines.

Hmmm well there is a good place to start, I thought you sorted that first off.

I reckon you should run it without out the plugs/compression to get the oil moving.

Let me know how it goes. I'm interested to hear.

i recon back feed the pump, like you would prime a water pump via the oil pressure switch hole, its slow but it does work. then pull all of the plugs put and wind her over. get some oil pressure and run your engine then work out the issues after its been running for a while, id b interested to see the video because, that would help somewhat. we do that to the performance engines we build at work if they wont build pressure by just cranking. it normally takes a bit but

well i pulled the pump off and have now reprimed every thing and fed some oil into both the inlet and outlet in the block as well ... Will have the manifold welded up tomorrow and should be all good again .... Before i wind her over again i might just put a dash of oil in each cylinder and also down each lifter bore

this if just a f'ing joke! You try to do the right thing and buy all new stuff and have everything reconditioned at you still get stupid f'ing problems! And to top it all off the stupid bloody temp sender adaptor snapped off if the head ... This is beyond a joke!
