not necc the guage, that can be checked by shorting out the wire to the temp sender straight on bare metal on engine, it should go straight to max.

it seems more like an electrical problem, clean all the contacts up everywhere. If the engine is actually overheating u will see the coolant bubbling out the overflow and take off the oil cap and oil smoke vapour rising. but u dont want to get it that hot to start with.
