Modding is not that easy over here. There is a 4dr with a CA18DET in germany, but its almost impossible to get it road legal. I'd like to get the most out of the suspension and do some minor motor mods, maybe twincarb and such. A dogleg 5-speed would be nice, too. But thinking of Shipping costs and the luck needed to find one... @nzdatman: To enjoy tax benefits the car has to be older than 30 years, in good shape and quite stock or modified "contemporarily". There's a league of car-nazis called TÜV monitoring this historic condition. It would be a nice story, if that nuremberg-dat was mine, but that time my 1200 was still in Switzerland, where it was delivered in 1972. It came to Hamburg 2008 and went down to Stuttgart last winter, where I got it a month ago to Munich. Allright, time for an update now. Didn't do much except driving, made about 4000 km without any problems - besides a frozen battery two weeks ago. Car stood outside at -15°
Last week I spend some hours removing bitumen-coating in- and outside. Wish I hadn't.. Floor looked good... from the outside. There must have been an aquarium inside some time ago, the rocker panel rusted open below both doors and the floor panels are thin like paper. Also discovered lots of rust at the longitudual member just underneath the leafspring socket in the back and tons of fibreglass on the front axle mounts. Feel quite uncomfortable thinking back of the last 4000 km.. After the new years brouhaha the car will be dissected. Rats, didn't want to start a restoration until the BMW is finished. speaking of...: I found some mates here talking about a mazda mx5 rear axle conversion, is there actually anyone who made it? wasted mx5s are quite cheap over here and if i really have to build the floor and such from scratch, why not going for some improvement?

I do not recall anyone attempting to fit MX5 rear axle (IRS) to a 1200. One guy has fitted it to a Datsun 1300 pickup but that has a full frame.

maybe my optimism is actually a lack of experience ;)
the mx5 IRS is attached to a nice one-piece-subframe some reinforcements here and there, six bolts and a guy who knows what to do is all i may need =)

update!
done some welding before ![]() after ![]() same otherside ![]() ![]() trunk floor and chassis beam also partly renewed, no pics at the moment next session: ![]() ![]() currently primed and waiting for the covering sheet also bought some AE86 wheels, 5,5J13 with 165/65. fine at the rear but spacers needed for the front ![]() ![]() what else? new clutch, new clutch master cylinder (fitted one out of a 120Y, 1200 parts not simply not available in germany) so long

But it also runs like hell (for a 1200cc), especially with the new clutch ![]() still wondering how to lower the shed in a legal way. guess I've got to go for some custom made springs.

Hello again,
not much progress, homemade rear closing panel looks like crap, going to tear it off again and go for one off a opel kadett/isuzu gemini. Also a new small problem accured: i need brake rotors. no online parts store in whole of germany got them, worldwide it's only rockauto. but paying over 120€/~170AU$ only for shipping seems quite beefy. does anybody have an idea why the shipping costs rise for every part that goes in the cart, event if its exactly the same item?
