The distincitive sound of a harley is from as everyone knows, the fact that they are just plain crap and cant idle.

As time went on, the distincivive sound of an engine that wont idle became somewhat of a tradmark, and in the early 80s when new laws about exhaust/engine noise (ADRs etc)were passed, HD took the government to court and said that it was the loud uneven noises that is a critical sale point of the bike. If you make us make a good bike that idles, then we wont sell any. HD won the case, and so despite the fact they HD can make a good bike they dont.

Or maybe its cause HD riders have big beards that part in the middle when they ride. who knows?

Harley sound.. odd fire V-twin,
A Harley engine has two pistons. The difference in the Harley engine is that the crankshaft has only one pin, and both piston rods connect to it. This design, combined with the V arrangement of the cylinders, means that the pistons cannot fire at even intervals. Instead of one piston firing every 360 degrees, a Harley engine goes like this:

* A piston fires.
* The next piston fires at 315 degrees.
* There is a 405-degree gap.
* A piston fires.
* The next piston fires at 315 degrees.
* There is a 405-degree gap.

And the cycle continues.

At idle, you can hear the pop-pop sound followed by a pause. So the sound of a Harley is pop-pop...pop-pop...pop-pop. That is the unique sound of a Harley.

HD did try to patent the "sound" but didn't win...

HD is a interesting tale, they were at the forefront of motorcycle technology for years, and then seemed to hit onto a good thing and just stopped, any of the air cooled bikes is a relic, but thats what people want, I know my Skoot was "30" yrs old when I bought it but it's still a great ride, you hear people say My Virago looks like a Harley sounds like a Harley but only costs 5 grand.. if you want it to look like a HD and sound like a HD.. go buy one.. ha ha

well there you go. Ill just sit back in my box right about now and let the harley guru tell the story.

you should have seen the AMF days.. they nearly went bankrupt, the staff bought the company back and then went onto good things, end of shovel and into Evo..
