One thing I like about this motor is that you can get a good look at the cylinders without taking the head off. Shine a light on one spark plug hole and look in the other. Then switch to the other side. :)
Haven't pulled the motor yet but I'm pretty sure its my clutch that went out. The last race I did, I quite engage the clutch and hammered it into 3rd gear. After the race I couldn't shift down to second or first until stopped the car. The car was making a noise but I drove it around an was able to shift up through all the gears. I thought maybe I bent a rod or valve but I hand cranked the car over and it turned with ease and no noise. Still need to do a compression test though. I plan to pull the motor anyway. Fun stuff.
Question: I'm currently working on a Nissan MA10 motor. I need a head gasket set for it. The Nissan folks here tried to insult my intelligence and tell me its a E16 motor and tried to sell me the set. Well, they are not helping. Anyone in the States know where I can get a head gasket set? Thanks

Pulled the motor today and seperated the engine from the tranny. Removed the oil pan as well. Had a small oil leak in my welds from when I made the oil pan. Engine looks good. Cylinders are clean and everything turns smooth. Clutch looks fine as well but the throwout bearing seemed wrong. I can't remember but is it held in there by a spring or something? Are you able to reach in there and slide it off the tranny shaft without removing anything? It seemed odd. Was that the noise I heard?

Yes, the Z22 is similar to the Datsun 1200 -- a spring clip holds the release lever to the throwout bearing holder. But it is a smaller clip.

Been offline for a while. My car last ran in July. I developed some engine noise and vibrations. Took a break on the project but yesterday I dove back into it. Come to find out after I removed the clutch plate that all 6 flywheel bolts were loose and 2 were sheared off! Spent yesterday removing one of the bolts with the second one giving me a hard time. After this is done, I'll have it back together for race day on Monday (Labor Day). Which is State Fair weekend. I was bummed and really thought I wasn't going to make it. I would have had this dang thing fixed if I would have just removed the clutch after I pulled the motor last month.
Back to the garage.
