Hey guys, I,ve been weighing car parts and have managed to strip 25.5kg off my 1200 sedan. As follows

Change to fi glass bonnet -6.0kg
remove heater -3.5kg
remove front bumper -4.0kg
remove cast iron manifold
to free flow -2.0kg
remove spare wheel -10.0kg

My wheels weigh 16kg, 6kg more than standard. And 24kg more than stock 12 inch steel rims and tyres. Is this the norm now or are my wheels weigh more than the average.

All wheel weights I have given are (wheel and tyre), and my wheels are 15/6.5....195/45/15.......

You can free up some more Kg by removing the passenger seat and rear seat.

How can your 16kg wheels weight 24 kg more than the stock 12s?

I think the seats are heavy, also carpet weights a bit also but its a road car and don,t really want to go full race trim. The standard wheel and tyre weighed 10kg and the new wheel and tyre weighed 16kg, so thats 6kg diff x 4 wheels = 24kg.
Also I know cyclists go on and on about the weight of the wheels on bikes and whos got the lightest wheels, and talk about rolling weight etc

16kg isn't a shameful weight, that's 8-10kg for the wheel and the rest for the tyre. My 13x6 hustlers with toyo proxie ra1's weigh that much if I remember correctly. Falcon rims and all the new stuff comes in close to 20 or more.

Its the price paid for more rubber, If posible (i.e. will fit over brakes, affordability)you might want to go 13" or 14" in a similir rim? I hav some 13's that weigh 4.2Kg's and some 14's that wiegh 5.0Kg's. obviously thats without tires, I recon tires would probly double them figures rughly?

The term here is 'unsprung weight', makeing your suspension not hafto work so hard to keep full contact with the road

Yeah guess that is the price you pay, I brought them because I thought they would look good on my car. I did,nt weigh the tyres befor they were fitted but I would think tyres would weigh more than they did in the eary 70s. The guy at the tyre shop said that a lot of steel goes into them now.
It just seams a bit dissapointing after taking off 25.5kg to put it back on to have a flash set of wheels...

It's the same with brakes though, to go better ya realy hafto go bigger (heavier), but ya just got find the happy medium.. Like there is no point having 380mm disks and 6 pot calipers on a 700kg car when 250mm disks an a good 2 pot caliper will pull it up as hard as the tires permit.

find some light weight jap wheels and remember your not going to ga anywhere fast with 12inch wheels :)

14" tires weighed more than 12" tires even back in the 70s.

You don't want any part heavier than it needs to be... use magnesium wheels, like Chromadora. They are lighter than factory steel wheels.
