sounds like a worthwile exercise rc... thanks

unfam coilovers are definately an option down the track..
would like to play with different springs rates first though just to see how it changes the handling

when are you going to join me L-man?

changing oil in struts is as simple as undoing the nut on top of the strut, tip the oil out, measure quantity, put new oil in, do nut back up

i dont know the full story on what oil would be there and what to use etc etc but 20W/50 seemed a good upgrade

i think there was an o-ring seal, probably worth replacing that as i think one of mine leaked a little after i'd done the mod

is the oil able to be changed in the strut without mods (ie cutting/welding)
if not then definately new inserts are the go.

but if i can change the oil easily i wouldnt mind trying that and replacing it with a better oil as a trial.

and yes i will definately take the load spring out of the rear, and install new shocks also.

any opinions on front coils? i wanna keep my ride height the same

thanks for all the help so far everyone

i have taken the oil out of front struts before and replaced with 20/50 motor oil (250ml for a stanza strut, but basically measure how much oil comes out and put that much back in

seemed to work well... but i was at uni then.... and new inserts arnt that expensive to a working man....

new shocks all round is the best thing you will ever do

and changing the rear springs... gotta do it!

Hey Ange
I'm only dumb but we got our ute to be a regular U2litre class winner at the winton sprints by continuously dicking with it.
Firstly get the best shocks you can buy.We went Koni adjustables front and rear and we do use the adjustment regularly depending on surface and conditions.
Secondly get the best tyres you can buy. We use toyo R888
an excellent tyre which will last for years with little or no loss to track times.
Thirdly piss off the overload springs on the rear. The softer springs will help with drive out of corners and help with rear end grip.
Good luck with it and keep on playing with it.
Bob

that could be a solution, but its just a band-aid solution.

body roll is terrible through corners, so if i can sort that it may fix the traction issue also

yeah correct, it was rebuilt not long after i fitted the rear housing.. kept the gears but new bearings and clutches

the pre-load on the clutch packs were set to hilux factory spec and it actually wouldnt slip at first after the rebuild.

a change of oil fixed that but it still often 'binds up' when doing u-turns etc.

has done about 18,000kms now.

after struggling with traction at the hillclimb i did a couple of 2nd gear burnouts to try and gain heat
into the tyres before the next runs. no trouble with the diff slipping there...
but in corners it would behave like an open diff

there was a fair amount of body roll so im guessing with all the load on the outside wheel,
the unloaded inside wheel broke traction.

but thats only my guess
