Ok, originally the plan was to fit a CA18DET into my 1200 coupe. After spending a few dozen hours researching half cuts on the net, and having not as much luck finding an abundance of CA's as what id like. as of late, my thoughts of instead doing an SR20DET conversion are sounding soooo much sweeter.
Some reasons being,

Availability of SR engines and parts,
The SR's look tidier in the engine bay,
Power output is marginally higher.

Among others of course. I have also heard rumours around the way, that CA bottom ends arent so crash hot???

can anyone give me ideas on what they have experienced or heard for that matter on both the upsides and downsides to either engine????

also, difference between red top SR's and black top SR's,
one has variable valve timing am i correct? so therefore upgraded cams and adjustable gears cannot be fitted??

au contraire:
* CA fits into 1200 engine compartment much better, though 'tidier' it may not be
* You don't need the aftermarket parts for CA, but the SR needs them
* Power output of stock CA18DET is higher than stock SR20DET with extra boost

Most AUS states outlaw SR20DET for road use in a 1200. Does Northern Territory allow it?

really? more power stock from the CA? i would have never known that. any knowledge of the bottom end myth?

im unsure of the laws now, but have seen a couple 1200's kicking around with SR's in the past.

I've never heard any bad things about the CA18DET bottom end, only about CA16/CA20 bottom end.

oh ok, i just had a look in the tech section at the power/weight comparison of the two engines, it doesnt differ that much between them. very interesting. your starting to twist my arm towards the CA again.

in regards to the oil starvation problem, would this intail making a larger capacity sump and possibly upgrade the oil pump also? i noticed PIGDOG has made a larger sump for his CA.

definitely go the CA if you want a turbo car... much easier conversion then SR and yes the likelihood of you getting the SR registered is very slim even though there is a few getting around.

that wasnt actually my sump, it was mildmans. but i'll be making a larger sump for mine and probably running an oil cooler that will add a little more oil aswell. will aim for about 5 litres of oil in it. should solve most of the oil starvation problems.

also seen people add an external oil return to the back of the CA head to help with oil drain back

but your best of rebuilding the bottom end of a CA anyway so that you know its good coz after 20 years of possibly thrashing its no wonder that alot of them spin big end bearings

but yeah main possitives for the CA are thats they are lighter, physically smaller, engineerable. they can also make 180-200rwkw on a good condition stock bottom end which would be more than enough for a street car. obviously if your building a drag car there are better engines you could use
and yeah you can easily get a CA to SR power levels...but then when you do the same things to an SR they obviously get the same kinda power gains

i bought a CA with box and loom and a couple of turbos ,that cost me 1000 and it was running but i pulled the head of it to see what the insides were like ,i was goin to get it rebuild but bought one that was rebuilt and was ready to start for 800 bucks ,so shop around first

if i was you i would buy a CA on its own if you cant get a half cut ,and rebuild it so you know what everythying is like ,this way you can belt the fuk out of it and know it wont pop
