#1 Supercharger Dilemma sc14 vs sc12 vs amr500
D Posted on: 2010/5/30 10:52
Following engines:
A12 which supercharger
A15 which supercharger

Aim: 100hp atw at 5500-6000rpm

Been doing the calculations
with the following cheapo chargers (some cheaper than others)
sc14 ($395) 1420cc - best bang for buck but big 12k redline
sc12 ($350) 1200cc - teflon coated but still big 12k redline
AMR ($375) 500cc- right size but 500cc and 16k redline

Id really like to go the AMR500 with 2:1 ratio for 10psi at 6000rpm
on the A12 as it will fit where the alternator backet is on early setups
where its located just below the radiator return pipe (very easy pulley setup
just like running power steering).
However at 12000rpm its spining 4000rpm below the redline and moving the
amount of air equivalent to an sc12 at 5000rpm.
Yet the SC12 is very hard to mount in the same position and will need a
more complex pulley system.

For the A15 the AMR500 is out but the sc14 seems to be the go as its only
gradually bigger and for the effort required I might as well run this one.

Opinions please :)

i was thinking of doing a supercharged setup but i wanted to do one on an A14/5 and wasnt sure were to get one or what size to use on an A14 or A15

The beauty about the bigger sc14 one is that at lower rpm it can make more boost.
However fitting the beast is an issue. The little 500 fits like a glove and doesnt
mind spinning and with water injection, one jet after the SU/carb and one on top of the
housing to keep it cool in heated conditions it could be all thtas needed for responsive
and reliable performance without spending zillions.

Some vw guys are doubling their 36hp 1200cc motors output in most cases.
There are some 5k corollas using the sc12 and making 108kw atw with a single 1.75 stromberg.

The torque and midrange response seems amazing compared to cammed NA setups.

on the autobahn... a standard 36hp 1200 would never make 100mph

The amr500 is so nifty

can you put up a list of the cars that came out with SC12 ,SC14 and AMR 500 super chargers ?

You get them from jap wreckers as youll never find them in wreckers.

I asked myself for an A12 what would be best for 100hp atw?
A little 500cc or 1200cc charger with the little one spinning easily and
fitting easily or the bigger one with fitment issues.
Will the 500 at 12000rpm make the same power as an sc12 at 5000rpm?

I would think the ARM500 might be abit hard to find locally though right ?
I sold my SC14 ... maybe should have kept it... lol

The downside of the bigger blower is that they have greater parasitic losses. Some bloke at ozdat once claimed that turning a bigger blower slower would have greater losses as there was more time for the air to leak past the rotors.
I run the S/C14, but I can't give you any rational arguement as to which is better either way. (Bigger is better?)
I know rogue is (or was?) runing an AMR on an A12, but I think his motor ate spark plugs. He was runnning lots of O/drive IIRC.
