On my 1200s, it runs out of fuel when the red pointer gets to where it is in your photo.

When it is directly on the E line (arrow), there is about 100 miles left to go.

Don't test that theory Summith! I found out the embarrising way one day. I was driving my friend to my house to show him the shed which he wanted to rent for his project car, and I happened to be doing a maximum distance test on my car. I was just saying something about fuel when the car started stuttering and died in the bum. the gauge was 1mm below E for me. Fast forward a few years to today and my gauge is never accurate, always hiding at least 1\4 of the tank from the reading. I just don't take the chance.

I cleaned up my sender unit cause the guage would not work and now empty is right on the E. Might need some more cleaning cause most cars I've had will run past empty a bit.

Hi littledarkone

Ha Ha, I also had that same problem earlier, that time my gauge reading was fluctuating time to time not at all stable, But now i am happy with it, I Pasted a silver Steel
Stripe on Broken and corroded electric lines , it is steady now,I am always in safe side , Most of the time i have these things in my car,

1-2 Ltrs of Petrol
0.5lts of oil
100ML of Brake and Cluth Fluid
Spark Plug
Contact Point,
2 to 3 M of Wires
plus my tool box with spare wheel etc
Additional Fuses (or Thin copper wire)

Thanks
Regards

silver tape on the resistor bit hey? I pulled it out a few months ago and polished the contacts with a bit of wet & dry sandpaper hoping it would help it read right but i didn't. The other thing was even with the igintion on about to start the engine the gauge wouldn't read anything when I was moving the arm on the sender. Do they need liquid or something to earth the sender?

Hi Littledarkone

Polishing is quite enough if you have corroded contacts , But My case is different i got broken silver stripes on my dash board so the connectivity is not there between, no other option i had ,i gave it to so many electrician , but none could weld it with electric,so i found a way it is success only you need thin silver stripes and a proper glue,
So i am happy and learned something that is

"if you put little more extra effort on any thing it is possible "

Thanks

littledarkone, I did the same as you and it made the guage work properly, I had to do it a few times and tested it with a multimeter each time. Hardest part was getting the sender out that was a pain.
Oh and no liquid required.

It is not theory. On my 1200 it is fact. But your 1200 may differ. You can find out for sure by driving it until it runs out of fuel. Then you will know.

The lesson to learn is that it is "normal" for the 1200 to haveplenty of fuel when the gauge is on the lower mark. Don't bother trying to fix what is not broken. If you wish, you could try to calibrate it, but it is not required.
