#6 Re: How to wire up an electronic fuel pump

Cheers guys, there's some great info on spst relays around!!!

I've got a relay and plenty of cable so it'll be easier for my
electronic skills to just run a new relay.

So power from battery = (fused) terminal 30
Relay to fuel pump = terminal 87
switched wire from (where do I run this one from???) = terminal 86
earth = 85

That look right to people??
Just not sure where should I take the switched source that only goes live when the ignition is on from?

The pump will be feeding twin DCOE webers on a stock 2L, I'm unsure about whether the pressure reg DD mentioned is required, there doesn't seem to be one on the Stock z22 720 4WD the pump came off.

Where would the reg be located if there was one?

I disagree regarding the relay. Yes it will work without but you are now putting all the extra current of the pump through an ignition switch that wasn't originally designed for it. It can burn out your ignition switch and possibly burn out the pump through under voltage.

When adding any extra electrical equipment (pumps, spotlights, halogen headlamps, etc.) to these old cars you should always use a relay to protect and ensure the correct operation of them.

You also need to add a safety switch so if the engine stops, or the car crashes, it stops the pump.

You don't need a relay. My 1200 has this pump, and it is fused through the Fuse Box.

Warning: the pump is medium pressure. Should use a 3.5 psi fuel pressure regulator for Hitachi or Weber carburetor.

You need a fused (needs to be appropriate for the pump, check what the donor car fuse size was) supply from the battery, a SPST (single pole single throw) relay and a switched source that only goes live when the key is in the on position.

Fused supply goes to terminal 30, Supply wire from Relay to the pump goes to terminal 87 on the relay. Switched wire goes to either terminal 85 or 86, whichever one you don't use is then connected to earth. The pump earth is connected to the car body at the pump (make sure you remove any paint etc under the earth).

That should set you up with a pump that only turns on when the key is in the "ON" position, has a fuse that protects it and a good strong voltage supply.

Hope this helps..

Also google "SPST relay" or SPDT relay" for more info..
