For larger photos, go to our club article Rotisserie. Click the thumbs to see the full size.

You don't need to create frame, just fairly simple brackets that bolts to existing bolt points on the 1200 unibody.

It's pretty obvious what its coming to. Either do a really bad job and keep your 'costs' low. Or build a frame. Surely you have a mate who can weld? Or has a welder??

A frame shouldn't cost you more than two cheap or second hand engine stands and a 6.5meter length of square hollow. You could model the thing and build it out of off cuts from a fabricators off cut bin. $2 a kilo of steel is about the going rate for offcuts, probably a lot less in the land of plenty.

Otherwise, take the doors and guards off and tip the shell on its side onto a mattress, lean it against a wall. Hook into it with a grinder and use a roller to apply a generous coat. That's about as cheap as you can get. Doesn't look good but it won't damage the shell and you can get good access to do the job properly.

Chris I have to disagree. I don't think low cost automatically means bad job.

I don't have very many friends at all here in Oz. Sure I can go rent a welder but I have no idea how to use it. Sure I can take a welding course or study it on you tube. But do I really want to weld for the first time on something that has to be completely safe and free from harm?

Good tip on the offcuts, didn't think of that. And the mattress would work if I didn't have doors and rear guards already perfectly set by a panelbeater (previous owner).

I've picked my brain trying to think of safe ways to do with minimal cost and minimal impact to the shell. I've spent a good amount of money on paint and I certainly don't want to do a poor job. The reason I revived this post was to brainstorm for ideas among a bunch of people who have been down this road before. Not jump to the end conclusion.

4x4carstands, they can hold the car 500mm off the ground plus some.

Otherwise find a mechanic etc with a hoist that will let you do it on the 2post hoist on sat or Sunday.

Thank god I got a car hoist !! But why go to that bother if your not willing to atleast hunt around a few panel shops and see if you can find someone that can do it. Spend a few bucks or do a half crap job and chance damaging it, rolling it on its side.. Penny pinching wont help you in the long run. Im saving to get my car painted properly, not looking for back yard painters called Harry Suck with a paint roller for $500 that promised a show car finish for 3 mths and then bitch when peels off in sheets and you notice it bogged with news paper.. and not going to do it myself either. If your not mechanically minded or a semi decent welder or painter or anything car related and have plenty of time and patients... Get a professional !! Most of the time, do it yourself stuff costs you double and a hell of alot less headaches

I have already asked 6 paint shops for quotes. Every single paint shop DID NOT want to paint under the car.

I'm not going to roll the shell on its side.

Also, I'm not going to do a crap job. I know how to paint. Why does everyone assume DIY equals crap?

Only if I did it Jeff

Just get it up as high as you can , get a clear facemask to stop crap falling in your eyes and mouth and get to it.

Might mean lying on your back for hours but you can get it done bit by bit

To me, DIY is the only way to guarantee the quality.

If you aren't go to DIY, find a Restoration shop instead of a paint shop.
