Just FYI additional air tanks for lots of volume for bigger spray jobs can be had cheaply by using air reservoirs from old trucks or any other large vehicle that has air brakes.

That's what I understood: the CFM is more important than the size of the tank.

Traditional spray painting guns require (if I recall correctly) 3.5 CFM (100 Liters/minute?).

However this one says 1.5 CFM at 30 psi (up to 6 CFM):

I REALLY like Graco spray equipment, on their hand-pieces the aluminium collar that retains the main air jet housing is offen a problem when it is used very heavily (I'm talking 12hr days) as the threads tend to cross. But the guns pull apart completely making them such an ease to clean (soak overnight in thinners).

Good adjustment of macro & micro, good availability of parts and great guns. Parts can be costly, to the point where you are better off buying a whole new gun when only a few critical components fail but by then you've probably come to the end of it's life anyway.

SO I guess you should look at a gun that is built well, has a good reputation and one that is easy to clean and easy to get replacement parts for. I suppose the availability of jet/nozzles is also relevant.

With air compressors, isn't it more to do with the CFM rather than the size of the receiver?
Usually air tools are rated at the CFM they consume when used?

I would look at the equipment I want to power using a compressor and get one that can give them what they need.

Any advice please. I am looking at buying a air compressor. I am hovering between a 50 liter and 100 liter. I want to be able to do small spray jobs. Any make that you could recommend? What must I look at.
