Okay so that one is midway through some repairs to corroded galleys on the block face and manifold face?

That first GX head you showed has a very straight edge on the back of the combustion chamber beneath the spark plug landing, interesting because I've never seen one with such a straight edge, or I've never paid close attention. It's probably no big deal but though I'd mention it.

Exactly the reason I am asking what is the best base to start from!

I want to be able to keep my eyes open for a good candidate head so when one comes up, I can pick it up and then when I am ready (cashed up ), I can start off on the front foot.

I've worked a standard no number A12 r-port head. It came out nicely to size up against stock oval port manifolds but after you pay for bits, over sized valves and a head skim (which you need after you've de-shrouded the valves and subsequently increased the chamber volumes) you may me better off investing in a naked stock H89, keep in mind they're worth $150.00 the $350 specials on ebay were a market spike and a few speedway people were involved in the purchases, so prices ought to come down a little.

But yes A12 r-port would be my first choice, the trick is to select the bits that will cut away but not clog or fall apart. Some bits take so much out it is hard not to take huge chunks out.

Thanks Chris,
I still have the original motor (round port) in my coupe and am wanting to keep it that way so I can return the car to std (retain value!)should I wish to do so in the future.
I have a couple of H89's that I got for peanuts in NZ so unless I am a lot better off with a round port (or GX, hopefully not with the $$ needed) I will probably use one of them.

I won't be doing the work myself, I want a fairly serious race head and know my limitations!

H89 is the best starting point. Almost any round port head can be opened
up as big as a h89 if you go up and will hit water galleries which can be
welded or filled with a good product. Then valves you need valves and the
list keeps going and going and going and might as well have started with a H89.

Im still wonder who bought the E15 hybrid speedway lot on ebay?

The seller of all that gear was on here once selling a GX head years ago only to be fed insults from some existing members of the time (some still existing). I think they were along the lines of the 'GX or not' argument but either way it was insulting to him.

He never came back to the forum and subsequently refused to release project photographs, which he had the intention of doing. What a shame, would have been really interesting to see (that's my next project btw).

I can get e series heads are as common as buick v6 heads but it wont be forever.
Its a shame that he wont go on these forums as the datsun community is not all
filled with people with bad intentions or certain arguments should be forgiven
after all it is a place where some people just let off steam. It cant be helped.

I was thinking Chris have you seen these water pumps? as you need to eliminate the
A series water for the E15 head. At least E and Ga16 have identical bore spacings.

Maybe a bit small though?
