Myles,
There is some good discussion about leaf live axle rear ends on ipraforum.com.au if you haven't seen or been there yet. The rules allow a degree of flexibility in the rear end.
If I was to modify the way the leaf spring mounted to the diff and allow the diff and leaf to move independently in the lateral and longitudinal directions (keeping the vertical movement synchronised), I could add lateral and longitudinal control arms IAW rule 9.10 and still stay compliant with rule 8.4.
this new lateral control device could incorporate a roll centre adjustment as b310gx has stated.

It really depends on how creative you want to be with rule interpretation.
The key thing with rule 8.4 is you must retain all the leaf spring mounting points and keep a configuration of live axle with leaf springs, but you can add more mounting and control points as allowed by the rules.
The fuzzy part is how you can take advantage of the new control devices and the tuneability they provide within the constraints of the rules.

Anyway food for thought if nothing else.

Bryan

exerts from CAMMS manual (3J rules).

8.4 Rear axle/differential for RWD vehicles:
• Live axles: The original configuration and type of all suspension pivot points on the assembly must be retained, save for lateral location as per article 9.10. The rear axle assembly is otherwise free. Fully floating hubs are encouraged.

9.10 Rear suspension components: Devices for the lateral location of the rear wheels on vehicles with a live axle, and any associated brackets on the body, are free. Brackets may be welded to the body. All other components which have any function in the location of the rear wheels must be retained unmodified except for bushings, which must comply with 9.3 above. Drive flanges, trunnions, hubs, stub axles and wheel bearings are free. It is permissible to add additional longitudinal rear suspension arms provided that all bushings are elastomeric and that the mounting points on the body only involve the addition of metal, save for a single hole per arm of maximum diameter 25mm.

Rule interpretation is definately key in IPRA as MANY of the rules are blurred or can be understood in different ways. I know of others working on 4 link style arrangement for IPRA cars and it's something I'll look at down the track. Cheers for the input.

matty

Good to hear you enjoy IPRA, hope you enjoy the build too!

Ok, weekend update...

I first continued to strip and clean up the interior, it just never seems to stop... and the bags of rubbish (metal, rubber, trim etc...) and getting larger and heavier.

I've now removed all of the sound deadener inside the car using a chisel and paint scraper, this worked an absolute treat in the cold weather. While doing so, I also began removing all of the rubber filler used along the seams inside of the car (to allow seam welding); this actually took longer than the sound deadener. Once the deadener and major strips/chunks of filler were off, I used a wire-wheel (on drill) to power through the remaining glue and pieces of filler lodged deep in the seams... this takes longer than you would expect but is bringing the floors up very nicely.

I between working on the above, I began removing all un-used brackets inside of the car... there were a LOT of them. I used a grinding wheel to grind back the brackets where they had been tacked to the body and prior to grinding all the way through, was then able to basically pry them off. Once that was done I could simply grind the remaining metal back to a smooth finish with the body. In a couple of spots the tack weld came with the bracket and I now have a few very small holes to fill but nothing major.

With only a few brackets left (including front seats), I have already removed the rear seat, boot catch, spare wheel, boot shelf and loom carriers among others. Leaving the passenger seat (front) wide bracket in, I will get the others out this week before prepping the interior for cage and paint. The shots below were taken before I vacuumed and cleaned up but you get the idea...

Next it was the engine...

Taking a motor and box out by yourself, never a fun experience... the best part though was knowing it didn’t have to go back in...!!

I started in the bay and began removing everything around the engine.. luckily for me I found even MORE dirt that some how hadn't come off with the pressure wash..?? I then unbolted the tail shaft from the diff (found a couple of redbacks hiding out) and got the trans ready to come out.

Not having worked on an older car for some time, I did find it quite easy to get everything ready to remove. As always, I had some dramas getting the box and motor to separate but once done, the engine lifted out with ease and has now made it's way to a new owner (at no cost, lucky him!). The box gladly dripped fluid all over my clean garage floor so I quickly chucked it on the back side of the rear seat and slid it outside with the tail shaft (still there if anyone needs an AUTO box or tail shaft).

With everything removed, I started cleaning (feels like I'm cleaning a LOT)! I scrubbed the right side of the bay down to the rails and it came up better than I expected.. with a fresh coast of paint, it will look very nice!! In the picture below, I left the left side before taking a photo to show the difference, and remember, both sides have already been pressure cleaned so even the left is MUCH MUCH cleaner than it was a week ago when I picked it up.

The next stage now (after finishing the brackets inside), is to prep the engine bay for paint before having the new front-end put in place along with the motor. My goal is to have paint (at least primer) in the bay by the end of the weekend, so stay tuned...

Hi Myles
Are you putting everything you remove from the car on the scales?
I would be very interested to know how much can legally be removed from an old, relatively sparse, car.

Hi Myles, Great project, great car to start with.

I'm interested in that A12 motor but only if it's a good runner, can you confirm that it runs okay? I think you said it was a little rough. Depending on how rough I'd be interested in buying it.

Chris

Thanks, but you're going hate me, it was a sweet badge until it snapped when taking it off... now it's in one of the bin bags lying around. Sorry, wish I had of known earlier

matty

I have kept all of the interior (in bin bags) so I can weigh it all up at the end, no idea so far but they're getting heavy!! I'll post it up once I'm finished removing and have worked out what has to go back in.

trb012

Cheers, should have some good progress this weekend.

Cheers Chris, it definately turned out to be a cleaner shell than it looked when I got it.. I was preppared to do some metal work but there will be minimal required, which is lucky!

Unfortunately the A12 has already left the building, still have the auto box and tailshaft if anyone needs it.
