ok so ,does anyone have any ideas on how far i should tkae the pilots out to ? and is it safe to drill solex jets ? they have 3 holes at the bottom of each jet and sized hole at the bottom ,im guesing the 3 holes are for the feed of fuel to the tip (hole at the bottom) and that they done need changing when i drill the bottom hole out ,also i know i will need to thourghly clean the jets before reinstalling them into the car
also does anyone have a reccomended brand of drills ? i know snapon (blue point) do them ,but is there another set i need to know about ? i know they come with a chuck/handle to drill with ,but im just wondering about any other brands ? CGL ? REPCO???
thanks ,im thinking of getting a set instead of getting tim to drill them being that ,if i have a set then i can just go up little by little from 55 ,to say 57.5 ,60 and so on

Drilling jets your self isn't such a great idea, if you can find someone who can do it use them. Or unless you have access to the right machinery it should be ok. I took mine to a carb specialist and had the lot drilled for about $15.00, I also scuffed the size numbers off the jest so I didn't get them confused.
It's a bit vague trying to figure out which jets you're talking about without pictures or their actual names. Do you have any photos?
Pilots on mine are 70 (I think) which is really big, but anything less than that the engine decides it's not happy.
Get some pictures up (not sure if you've realised but your build thread has six pages of talk, in a row)

ok i got the,m drilled to 65 and now only cylinder 3 pops ,so i guess thats being caused by the drop in compression compared to the other 3 cylinders ,does this sound right ???
its tolarable and only does it sometimes ,if i got higher again will it solve the problem for good ?
its only intermittant so im not fussed just a little annoying
still have test driven it on the road with the pilots drilled but just taking of is when it pops
hoping tonight to get it on the rollers or at least a test drive to comfirm the pilot jets are the right size
so apart from popping its sweet as !

The pops are normally because that cylinder is a little lean. To eliminate the pops at idle normally you adjust the idle mixture screws or upsize the pilot jets.
Why is there a drop in compression on three?

i think the rings are stuffed chris :(
it was rebuilt before i did any work to it ,and was running in my ute when i got it ,then i went a14 which died ,then back to this one ,which was fine to start with but seeing as i gave it a 60thou shaved h89 i think the rings couldnt cope with the extra comp and gave up
oh i took my jets to tim and he drilled them again and i then put them back in and tested it ,i screwed the pilot screws in all the way then revved it a little ,pop pop pop ,then i turned then a full turn out ,sarted to not pop as much ,then i would them out another 1/4 turn and it only popped once ,so i gave it a little more and it has stopped completely ,but i am still to drive it cos i got back to the shop and the shop next door had closed early so no rollers and dad was busy with a customer till we had to lock up
hoping to go for a spin on wednesday ,cos i got tafe tomorrow and wont be in mandurah ,but im pretty sure the popping has gone away :D :D :D :D :D
and it doesnt blow stuff all smoke anymore ,i think it was the thottle pumps that were doing it ,and when i took them off i pulled the plugs out and found they were all very sooty ,so i checked them yesterday witout the pumps and they are starting to bocome a browny colour instead of black ,so if i get it out for a drive soon then ill recheck it and that should give me a good idea of what its at while cruising :D
and chris are solex jets messured in mm?
eg 55 pilot = .55mm jet hole
is this right ?

ok update !!!!
great news !
got the ute running sweet today ,and it now starts good and idles ,doesnt stutter from low rev takeoffs
so firstly my jets !
main jets =137.5 main air jets =170 pilot jets =65 pump nozzles =45 !!! huugggeee jet block =8 bleed pipes =M
ok so last night i pulled the carbs off my ute and pulled them apart to clean everything just incase there was some carbon in the bypass holes and stuff
also pulled the venturis out and found 2 were loose ,so i put new gaskets on the inner venturis and then retightened them after cleanin them in thinners
next i put the throttle pump rods back on and did what the guy from recarb said to do when setting them
so stupidly i listened to him and put 5 washers on the spring side of the pump arm and then put the carbs back on ....turns out when i put the carbs on ,they pumped too much fuel (not suprising) so i then took the pump nozzles to tim to get them soldered and dilled ,so i then could find out what size to buy new
he said they were too small to drill cos they dont make a bit that small ,so instead i thought i could try adjusting the pumps to suit instead of the jets
next i pulled the carbs off ,and took all the washers out and just put one on each side of the pump arm ,this was to just hold the spring captive and the split pin captive too
next i put the split pin in the bottom hole of the rod to attain minimum pump travel
put the carbs back on and beought the engine up to opperating temp ,balanced the carbs ,and set the idle
next i took i took off down the driveway at the shop from a stand still ,as i would take off normaly ,to test the carbs for stuttering and bogging , aced it ,pulls without trying to stall ,and didnt bog when i flattened it from a rolling start in second gear
so atm its all good ,going for a drive tomorrow to get fuel ,bp ultimate for sure ,and then going to do some more tests
it blows a little smoke but i cant be bothered stuffing around with it ,cos im going a15 ,i will just leave the jets and then change them then
ok so my idea was ,that with the pump spring bound up abit (with a heap of little washers) it would move the pump arm more than what it would if it had to build up the same pressure without the washers by just movement of the pump rod itself ,this was correct ,i noticed a huge differece in travel in the rod when i took the washers out
ive got pics so ill put them up to show what ive been up to ,and i found amy old pump rods from when i got the carbs ,so ill put a pic up of them too ,just shows why i didnt want to run the haha
cheers

ute looks good, nice stance on her, just wanted to say my carbs seem to run terrible on anything higher than 95 octane.so i wouldnt fill it up maybe put half a tank in,then if it runs crap u can fill the rest up with a low octane fuel to bring it down.mine fouls the plugs up within 15 mins of driving on 98.95 runs all day.some other people seem to have no problem.just thought that might be of some help. vid?

oh ok ,ill keep that im mind ,what comp are you running mine pings if i run it on premium (95 i think ?) but 98 it runs good ,ill fill it half way up ,drive it around and if its crap ,ill fill it up with 95 octane
umm no video yet ,im hoping to make an in car video tomorrow ,or on the day of the car show ,and then put it up ,just youtube wants me to sign up for some google stuff ,so it wont let me look at or post up videos until i get it sorted
