not only that lol but when a car is driven the body flexs even if its a tini amount it will pop the paint off and then the wind will get under it and pull it all off.

"ok then if masking tape pulls it off its most likely goin to fall of when you drive it and if that happens its back to bare metal to put a soild base down or you will keep having trubles sorry for the bad news mate Re: Two tone paint job...." he's right, you've got adhesion problems & it'll peel off in strips or sheets going down the road. you also said you didn't clear the car but you compounded it & polished it up - are you using single stage paint other wise you're polishing base coat. If its base coat it has no strength like clear will, it has no hardener. Put the base on, clear it, buy GOOD tape, not cheap sh*t & mask off the strips then clear again, if you F it up then you're just sanding clear. Or do it the way you did in the pic I didn't see till now, good luck with it.

Well I quess I was just stressing about pulling up paint with masking tape as I,m not having any probs at all.
EDP.... Yep i,m compound cutting and polishing the colour coat and not doing a clear, do you mean colour coat by base coat. If it helps the paint is Dulon laquier, on the tin it says to put down 4-6 coats and to wait 6 hours befor compound cutting, I think to clear so an option only. I had the day off work today and cut and polish almost half of it.....its starting to look ok, I sanded off the overlap between the two colours and cut and polish, theres now a smooth finish from green to black, pics up soon.......

The lacquer explains a lot, terminology is the problem here. Base coat & clear coat type paint jobs are different then a base color & another color on top of it. The lacquer is why you can buff the "base", if it was an acrylic base that wasn't cleared buffing it wouldn't work to shine it up, you'd probably rub thru it instead.
look forward to the pic's of your car. See the link for an example of cut & buff of a hood I did - base & clear.... http://www.spiuserforum.com/showthread.php?161-Sanded-amp-buffed

If I painted cars for a living I'd of been fired about 3 years ago, thats about how long it's taken me to get this far on the complete project. Its been a nights & weekends thing for too long now. I'm almost done with the Datsun, just need to spray base/clear on the undersides of the hood & trunk then a bunch of trim in matte black. I did just spend waaaaaaaay too many hours doing cut & buff, there's a real art to it. Very easy to screw it up.

thanks man, appreciate the cudo's. You gotta pat yourself on the back too, painting no easy feat no matter how you slice it. Personally I think its much more challenging then turning a wrench, there's a talent for that too but they sure are different.
get some pic's of your up, I want to see it!
