i'm getting a spare cam cut for my ute and fitting h89 head to it, the engine is standard at the moment, can i take out the engine and turn it upside down so the cam followers doesn't fall out, instead of opening up the sump? or is there a easier way?

You should also get the followers refaced so that the life of your cam is maximised or you risk premature failure..

Yes you can and its the quickest and easiest way. But as ssskiwi says get the followers resurfaced to suit.

Don't you need the sump off to properly guide the camshaft in? Taking the sump off takes a few minutes anyway.....

There isn't really a quick way. There is the proper way (reface and replace bearings) and the short cut.

Replacing the bearings is not part of a "proper" job. Nissan recommends you leave the cam bearings in there unless they are worn (which doesn't often occur). If you replace them it requires line honing.

See our tech article Camshaft replacement.
