Yes, electronics are damaged by over-voltage. It seems your electrical parts are good (you didn't need to replace the electric wiper motor, but had to replace the electronic wiper control module). Gotta love the Datsun 1200 -- no electronics at all. During nuclear war it will continue to run while the Silvias will all fail

Hi David, Where abouts is that Control Assembly box normally located on a Silvia. Is it in the centre console?

I saw this ad on ebay for a 300ZX gearstick..which looked pretty similar to an S13 one and thought he may have one:

Thanks Andrew,

I can run without one ... just means I have to push down on the 'matchstick' thing in front of the gear lever.

But failing finding a Silvia one I will have to check out the other types - just have to study up on the pin outs, circuit diagrams and wire colours.

The 240SX workshop manual has a pretty good write up in the AT section.

Yes dp ... I HATE electrics

Heater Hose Disaster!

Driving home from work yesterday and noticed the TEMP gauge needle went OVER the top indicator. As I was deciding how to pull over from the middle of traffic I quickly flicked over the heater to let fluid in and give some relief.
That's when the hose burst and flooded the cabin with hot steam and over me too.
How do you decide whether to use the brakes or save your own skin? (literally!).

Managed to do both with only a very small scolding - guess who got a lift home in a tray tow truck?

Anyway.... as you can see in the pic this was a consequence not a cause.

I did a compression test this afternoon 1:160, 2:125, 3:115, 4:140 - leaning towards head gasket but there's no contamination in the oil and the plugs looked ok.

Possibly a failed thermostat caused it.

Any ideas?

ideas ...

* burst hose can be caused by a sticking radiator cap, but that doesn't cause overheating. But maybe it caused another leak somewhere else in the engine compartment

* bad head gasket can cause overheating if the engine coolant leaks out (or is sucked into the engine) making the radiator low, then it overheats

* test your thermostat with a kitchen thermometer. If instead you decide to just replace it, test the new one before installing
