When your windows are closed they allow a better flow of air through the cabin from your front air vents, hope that make sense.
IE: They reduce cabin pressure to promote better airflow.

just curious as to what purpose the side vents on 1200 utes serve? they must be some form of air flow exit but air flow from where? just a random thought that has been bugging me... i want to know why they are there.
