I remember hearing of Maddat's a13 speedway engine which was
boosted with 30+psi spun to 9500rpm and making over 400+hp. Although 1296cc is over the limit for boost in U2ltr you could destroke the L13 crank from 59.9mm to 54mm then for 1169cc and 83mm bores with 2.496 rod/stroke ratio. 83mm de pistons, z22e worked conrods and for a gearbox you have plenty of options for rwd or... If you went midmount the cheapest option is a Pintara ka24e/de lsd front wheel drive unit which have the vicous lsd on some models and bolts up to the L series block. I see those cars at pick a part often and always thought it would make a great 90 dollar option for midmount L series powered 1000. L16 blocks are cheap and the L13 crank would be the only big part of the equation for 54mm but once that is sorted the rest will fall into place with even the option of a z18et head and some serious manifold often available from ex-G. Fury old stock. http://autospeed.com/cms/title_Packag ... anuts/A_1699/article.html

We'll see what happens. Either way it won't happen this year, the car would take me a minimum of 2 or 3 years to build, unless I had a car ready to go for the right price, and it looks like the more simple approach of an A series like Bert and Simon suggested might be the way to entry level racing. The only thing that really concerns me is an A series towing my fat arse around a track will make for a high consumption of engines!!
Let's see what fate drops on my doorstep.

fate might drop me on your doorstep. but ive been dropped on my head too.
either way, im sure you will make a decent car out of it. seems most people get good results by keeping it simple, so a12 or a15 with 5 speed seems simple enough, and if you get the handeling right, should help. get out in the shed tomorrow in the 40 deg, should help loose a few kgs ![]() what happened to your avatar don? The deal has been done. I'm taking the 1000 2 door sedan off Leigh. It will be coming home tomorrow some time in the early afternoon. So when the time comes in the next few weeks that I will be able to assess where to start I will start my first project build thread as now I know exactly the end result that I will see and I know almost exactly what I want from it. So I can justify the time and money to complete the project. The ideas are flowing.
Improved Production Datsun 100 coming soon (ish)... Deadline for me is my 40th. Just over 2 years. Lets see if I can make it happen. And nice work there Mik. It's good to see that you do have a hidden talent... Even if it is just your incredibly mild superpower.

Congratulations Don
You wont regret the 1000, its a fine and simple machine. Boosted a12 will be the go, cheap powerful and proven. Cheap conrods can be had from the ca18de/t for extra strength and suzuki pistons from swift and vitara are often used in Honda D16 big boost engines with great success in drag racing and street builds. That rear panel below the no. plate hiding the leaf springs can be removed instead of repaired as it acts like a parachute. Will be great to finally have the first race 1000 build-up thread on this forum!

Nice work Don.
So you mentioned a turbo A12 will this push you out of the U1600 class?

No problemo Bert. I will be definately contacting you in reguards to some of the mods I want to do and in reguards to what I can get away with. But ultimately like I said before, I want to build it properly the first time, well thought out and as much by myself, obviously with peoples help be it advice or the odd helping hand. Or in Miks case, Just plain odd... Just kidding Mik. But not really. I think I might cruise out to Winton to see sikyne in action and to talk about the engine development side of things. The one area I won't have drama's in is the gearbox department. That I can do.
