Hi Michael, I received your email by the way. Thanks.

Regarding your engine, there is one head bolt that is different to the others, it is longer in the shank and perhaps a fraction thinner. It is intended to continue the oil circuit to the head.

If this bolt isn't used in the right place there would be no oil at all getting to the rocker assembly however this wouldn't result in the engine burning oil excessively. Instead what you'd end up with (along with a whole heap of other problems) is the rocker arms ceasing or biting into the rocker shaft and not properly lifting and closing the valves as they should. Subsequently you may get bent pushrods and in some case failure in tappets or wiping of cam lobes.

A smokey motor is typically a result of worn piston rings (poor compression is the big indicator of this) or worn valve guides. Also if the valve stem seals are worn you may also see an increase in white smoke.

Worn piston rings lead to the engine losing power in the compression stroke as much of the combusted power is lost via leakage past the rings, oil will also find it's way into the combustion process resulting in 1: smokey exhaust and 2: excessive crankcase blowby (PCV) which also recirculates back into the induction (smokey, oil laden vapors get recycled back into the induction cycle).

That could mean that your guides are quite worn also. If everything is fresh the smoke is not that visible even with no seals fitted.

On my Alfa that had this issue, It didn't belch a blue cloud all the time. The biggest oil cloud would occur after slowing via the transmission (5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 1st) to a stop. Then taking off... cough... cough.

The high engine vacuum would suck oil past the guides into the combustion chamber like you experienced.

What colour is the oil. Black, blue, white or a combination? Generally, if if it is continuous blue smoke at steady rpm it will be from the rings. Off idle and cruise it can be valve stem seals. Black smoke indicates fuel which can also cause oil to burn in extreme cases.

You need to give more information on when the smoke is appearing and colour etc otherwise all comments recieved will be general or guesswork. It's like telling your mechanic your car won't run but not mentioning you filled the petrol tank with water...
