Hi Guys,

Just wondering what the best turbo upgrade is if you're using the factory ecu for SR20DET S13 into a 1200 ute:

Mods:
FMIC
3In Exhaust with dump
Larger fuel pump
Lightweight flywheel
Lightweight pulley kit

Thanks.

Kind regards,

Dave

Few people will argue against that the "Disco Potato (Garrett GT2860RS)is the best streetable turbo for an SR.
I'm doing my research at the moment and have narrowed it down to either the dancing spud, GT2871 or GT2876. In rough terms the 2860 is rated from 350-380 horse, the 71 is 400-430 and the 76 420-450.
These figures obviously totally depend on supporting mods making use of this extra flow capability.
The 60 will be least laggy (basically none) and the 76 will be a big laggy but obviously bigger top end.
To further confuse the issue you could put a bigger turbine housing on the 60 and it may prove to be just as laggy as the 76 but make a similar top end.
The more I read the more confused I get! At the end of the day unless you're making a dedicated drag car the 2860 will be your best option. Either way, you can kiss $1400 good bye!

As a side note, one thing you will need to add to your list of mods is bigger injectors otherwise a bigger turbo is a waste of time and money (and you may need curtains for the windows you just put in your pistons). You should look at 700 cc's as a minimum to leave yourself scope for further upgrades.

I'm far from an expert so consult an expert before spending big bucks but that's what I have come up with so far!

EDIT- I just read your post properly (!) and thought I should add that regardless what turbo you put on you will need to get the computer reflashed or replaced with aftermarket. They have a certain level of self adjustability to changes but won't cope with a bigger turbo/injectors/etc without mods.

An upgraded turbo will still be fine ran by a standard ecu provided you don't just think you cans wind the boost up, by far the easiest and most cost effective upgrade would be a t28bb turbo from some s15's. Cheap, ball bearing and slightly larger then the standard t25g.. I've seen these make 200rwkw+. Then the next 2 shoota has already covered, although it would be a waste to run them with the standard ecu and not extract the power they can deliver.

For a couple of examples, I have 2 mates using 2871R's,Both running 040 pumps and 700cc injectors one is just basic bolt ons and a nistune, 15psi it makes 220rwkw
Other one has a Haltech ps1000 ecu and poncams, 20psi it makes 280rwkw.
Now that would be fun in a 1200!!

Thanks for the feedback guys. Im located in Fiji and there are no dynos here thats why im looking at using the factory ecu. I have everything else sorted out but still deciding on the turbo setup as i would like to run high to mid 12's down the quarter.

I guess one option would be to find someone sr20 ute who is running 12's, copy the same setup including ecu and see how i go. Im only worried about the climate here as max temps are only 34/35 deg cel but its really humid. Wonder if that will have a drastic effect on the tune.

Anyone running an sr20det and has done low 12's...lol

Thanks again guys. Really appreciate it. Will post some pics of the ute soon.

Unfortunately that's gunna make it really hard to tune properly. I'm not sure but there are possibly companies that do a computer chip reflash based on the specs of the engine.

Hopefully I can claim to have run 12's or better once I finally get mine done! I'll probably run it bog stock until I've got it engineered and then go crazy once it's all legal. Unfortunately I can't change the ECU until post engineering. Once mine is tuned you can match my specs and buy my computer!

Good luck with it, love to see some photos.

if you wanna run standard ecu imo -

exhaust
pod
intercooler
really good electronic boost controller apex avc-r or somethin and learn how to use it that way you have some tunability

you are really limited by the fact you can't get it dyno tuned, you can't upgrade injectors or anything without getting it tuned

A standard sr with a decent driver will net a 12 sec et with some decent rubber. If you have access to a runway and someone that can tune an ecu you can do it that way lol I've helped road tune a few cars.

There are a few workshops around here that will remap a standard ecu to suit your mods.. Although afr's should still be checked on a dyno

Ok thanks guys. I think i will run it stock and then work my way up and will do some research regarding Nistune. Someone told me that i can use an adaptronic ecu with a bigger turbo, etc and it will tune itself to some extent. What do you guys think of this? I think i'll go with the disco potato.
