There's nothing special about them. It's just that if I use standard 1 piece nuts it'll chew into the mags as there is no pressed metal inserts. There are the proper 2 piece nuts at Otomoto but I didn't want to spend $220 getting them just yet.
I just started the A12GX motor conversion and ripped the A10 out, got the A12 ready and I thought I'd pull the rocker cover off to prevent damage and wouldn't you know it there's a broken head bolt. And then I find a stripped thread at the alternator bracket mount. Awesome. Looks like the head is soft. So the A10 is going back in for now. I guess I'll have to do a bit more work to the new donk first. Oh well. S h i t happens...

that sucks!
have you tested the hardness of the head? pretty simple test, or your work would certainly have a fancy way to do it i suppose

The first giveaway that the head may be soft is the fact that the head bolt washer has sunk into the head and thrown up a burr. I have a few heads laying around and none of them have this sort of wear. I have had some L series heads do the same thing. It may still be useable but how long a life span it has now is unknown.

The old gear lever nylon bushings were non existent and someone had done a semi bodgie repair with some washers so while I was at work today I snuck on to the lathe and turned up a couple of bushes out of brass to tighten up the gear shifter. I'm too tight to pay $30 for them and I gave away all good ones long ago as I didn't believe I'd be playing around with standard gearbox's again.
![]() While I'm at it I might as well get the exhaust sorted, when the A12GX is finally ready for instalation I won't have to frick around.

I bought a set off ebay years ago, only fitted them like last week. I had to spend a bit of time filing them down

They only took about 45 minutes to make and the material was free. I needed to fire up the lathe anyway. The worst part was cleaning up all the brass splinters. Once mixed with the coolant it was a pain to clean off the lathe. So in the end it was cheaper to make them than buy them. Plus every now and then you have to save some cash.

So now the A10 is back in and running. So I am officially back to square one.
And to ad to the broken head bolt dilemma, it turns out that only 2 of the 9 available bolts have washers underneath them. So I pulled one with a washer and guess what, another buried mark under the bolt head consistent with having been previously fitted without a washer... The plot thickens. I think the broken bolt may have bottomed out and broken when the head was being fitted. Possibly. Either way there was no bolt head or washer in the rocker cover so I guess I'll never know the truth.
