ok spoke to the guy fello at southsides and he said to try and fit the cam and dummy fit everything up to get the piston to valve clearanca sorted ,cos this cam still holds the gear fine

And it looks like he can fix this one for me :D

Sorry mike ,but it might mean you get to keep your old cam

hey ernie ,no i cant get the cam into the block

i rang my engine builder at lunch and they said that the cam bearings were machined to suit the old cam that was sent up with the motor ,and i gave them a different cam to grind ,which wasnt matched to my new bearings

anyways im going to have another go tonight and bolt my old cam gear onto the cam and try to put it in ,if it wont go in im going to get it all put on a pallot and sent back up there for it to be sorted out again

bearings need to be clearance d to the cam your running,or you may burn up the bearings if cam is to tight.cheers, you can only check piston to valve clearance, after cam has been dialed in correctly. did they give you a tdc inlet figure.

Personally I wouldn't trust that cam, repaired on not. It would be as expensive to repair as to replace. IMO it would be safer to replace it and learn from your mistake.

As for the cam bearing problem, there is a chance that the builder dif trial it with an old worn camshaft but the likelihood of the cam journals being that worn is pretty remote. I don't remember people honing bearings so much as scraping them to get the correct clearence. But there is a chance the journals on the replacement cam are oversize. Measuring with a vernia isn't good enough. You'll need to use a micrometer as they don't lie.

If it was me, I would assume that if you provided them with that cam, it should after all the machining and honing drop together nice and easily.

The fact that you say the head was not cleaned and you paid for it would suggest that it perhaps was not done correctly.

But you need to give them the benefit of the doubt and take it back and say prove me wrong. If it is wrong and they are at fault the least they could do is sort out the cam issue, by re-doing another camshaft or repairing the damaged one.
