RE TACHO: Should say positive. You are right.
Can be wired in series or parallel. Series is simpler, but when tacho wire pulls off by accident, the engine stops.

Glad to hear it's working. Yes, it seems nearly every wire in the round 12-pin connector needs to be moved to a new spot! not just a couple of wires.

Going to have a try at this swap tomorrow, just want to know if the wires will pull out of the back of scocket or do I have to cut and rejoin, can someone tell how to do it....thanks

I did some research on this and it seems there are three clusters:

1. Rectangle gauge
2. Round gauge (Coupe, Sedan GL, etc)
3. 1979-up ute round gauge

#1 and #3 appear to use the same wiring.

If putting #2 in place of #1, change two (or more?) wires around. See Instrument Panel Conversion section "Dash Changes for Sedan, Ute and Station Wagon"

When you are done, please tell us which wires you had to change around.

I have been mucking around with this all day and now have most of it going.....
As standard the wires were ( the missing ones are the ones I pulled out and forgot to wright down) are as follows

My car has two black wires and no blue, so it has been a bit confusing working to some of diagranes giving but most of the dash works with the wires in these places

12 black

Be aware there are TWO round gauge clusters, each wired different
* 1970-1973 Coupe/GL round cluster
* 1978-up Ute round cluster

My cluster is from a 1200 coupe so would be the early type.....ok its all in and running now, changed these wires

7 blank
8 white red

Below are both rectangle and round variations of the wiring. I was pretty pedantic writing it all down but wouldn't bet my house on it. It did work for me though.

These are the wires from a Round Cluster (clock not tacho) that was taken from a ute being wrecked. I am unsure of the year.
