Great pics Shoota,

d'oh!! use a flap disc to gently grind down those tacks... is it the camber tops that dont allow enough thread protrusion or the new strut insert? If I plan to use std tops would I expect similar issues? finally.. are camber tops necessary or just nice because you can dial everything in... considering my build will just be a driver.

CHeers Ed

Hey Ed.
I'm not sure if the standard strut top will have the same issues. I didn't actually measure the length of the threaded section on the strut insert. I'd say it would be fine without any mods.
For a strut swap generally you will require either camber tops or a different length LCA (or adjustable) as the stub axle offset from the strut is different compared to the standards. I haven't actually done the measurements to see if the angle is greater or if the bearing location on the stub axle is just out further. Either way it gives you greater positive camber. It'll turn into corners well!!

thanks for the info Shoota,

yeah ive got Stanza struts, but ive decided to use TRX wheels which will hopefully compensate for the change in offset. To my knowledge (and thanks to this site), the late ute I have (1981) has the correct LCA to use the Stanza strut.

I will just need to revisit the info on strut insert lengths but I think a 260Z strut for me will be ideal.

again, all this info you are putting up is very helpful. thanks!!

Cheers

Ed

Ed you will end up with pos camber if you don't lower it with that set up. You can swap your lower ball joints for stanza ones to give slightly more neg camber if using stock rubbers instead of camber tops. I've used both set ups and found camber tops with ute ball joints good for street. I'd put stanza with camber tops for track plus more

Ps I'm using 240-260z shocks and well suited to 190lb springs

All the 1200 LCA work with Stanza struts. You just swap the 1200 balljoint to the Stanza ball joint, which is the right size to fit to the Stanza knuckle arm.

This also pushes the bottom of the strut out farther, giving Negative camber (compared to 1200 strut).

looks good shoota,
spewing about the upside down one... you gonna be able to get the locking nut and seat off? pretty sure the thread stops a couple of mm before the end?
cutting it off isnt an option?

Yeah I think it was too late at night to be welding!
I'll just cut it off. The top section of the thread doesn't matter anyway. It's just a pain in the arse and embarassing more than anything!
The proper bottom section I only tacked so it'll be fine to weld back on properly.

Cheers Steve.
This thing will be far from a nice car but enough to keep me interested while the other ute slowly takes shape!
Certainly won't be to your level of finish!!
