G'day

Got my eyes on this 1200 Ute ----> 1979 DATSUN 1200

Was just wondering what I should be looking out for when I go to inspect it....

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers! Burke.

Looks pretty good to me, someone has obviously spent a bit of cash tarting it up and a spare A14 is handy... I'd be looking for bog anywhere, or evidence of hidden rust underneath the pretty paint (bubbling, cracking etc).

The owner admit it had little rust but had it fixed bout a week ago.... he knows how important it is and has shown receipts as proof.... has also just been resprayed....

Guess I'll just have to look really hard to find any problems....

Nice ute. Find out also if it has disk brakes (can't tell from the pics) on the front, if not ask for a lower price. Do you have any pictures of the engine bay?

one bad spot to check which is very common is to look at where the leaf springs hook attach to the body/cabin underneathe the car and make sure there is no rust there.

Stick your head up under the dash and look for rust, in the corners. my first sedan had big holes on both sides here, its not seen from the engine bay, and i never noticed until water started dripping on my knee while driving. Also floor pans.

Also look for accident damage, look very close at where the guards bolt up under the bonnet, close to the headlight. Pop your head under the front end and look for cracks where the radius rods mount to the chassis, and any evidence of repairs. Im a spraypainter and any car that 40 or so years old would have been in a smash repairs at some point in its life.
