So to counter both of you once again l18 crank into l16 block, with l18 rids and 240k pistons- pretty sure no machining and get to use the apparent lighter l16 block.
Depending on how you position motor, 10kg extra with l18 won't make much difference in a street car, and the marginal extra torque and power stock would offset most of it in a light 1200.

Exactly If it were a dedicated track car I can understand the weight saving but for a street car just wind another 1psi into it to compensate
Anyway rurired its your car and you need to make the decision not what we tell you to do.

G'day guys,
Thanks for all the input and ideas. I think a few people misunderstood the engine stamping bit. This was not my main point but rather an additional bonus. As some of you may know I was originally thinking about going with a CA18 or SR20 but once I realised how much more they weigh, I began thinking of other options. The Z18ET was mentioned as it is both injected & factory turbo which met my requirements. It's not as common as your typical CA18 or SR conversion and its a better looking engine for the era of the car. Although it seems like a lot of mixing and matching it makes sense. If I can put an engine together which weighs the same (maybe a tad more) as the A15 I'm currently running then that's a big plus for me. Weight saving is the whole idea behind it. Although it would handle the extra weight no problems...but 10kg here...10kg there...it begins to add up. The answer to more weight is not more power. Weight also effects suspension ride & handling. The more weight...the more strain on the suspension. Then you might have to think about bigger brakes. Again...more weight. It all adds up. I know that were talking about 10kg here and it probably doesn't matter to most...but 10kg is 10kg. If it can be done easily enough...why not. I do plan to occasionally use it for a track day here and there so maybe I can use that as an excuse. Keep the advice and comments coming guys. Cheers, Joe

Z18et has the extra weight in the right place below
while CA at the top due to heavier twin cam head z18et 15.5kg vs 24.5kg for CA18de head. The L18 block is 10kg heavier and if going EFI in the future can be an issue as pollution gear must go back on unless its a rare pre 74 block which are almost non existent. L16 with 85mm bores and L18 crank which goes straight in is the cheapest for 1770cc, no pollution gear and lightest. Add a light Z18et head and as Stuart says just add more boost! Or extra $350 sneaky L20 stroker L16 for 1952cc. Stuart wouldnt you say your Z18ET has better midrange than most equal capacity turbo engines thanks to twin spark pro swirl 8v hemi style chambers and LPG? :) not to mention simplicity and economy. Most peeps dont see the Z has some serious unmatched torque Joe sure youre aware of Stuarts Z setup? (trb012) http://ozdat.com/forum/download/file.php?id=19246&mode=view

world's cheapest machine shop you've got there D!
balancing, fully prepped rods, machining counterweights and journals or line boring all for only $350??? lol what's their number? There is some seriously dubvious info in here about weights of various engines. As someone who's done L series 1200s to death, I can tell you there is ZERO noticeable diffference to handling even for a 100% track car between an L16 with L18 crank and a 2100cc L20B or anything in between. You'd have to be the princess feeling a pea through 10 mattresses to notice it!
