Tested guage as per wiki, guage works, so mech says its the sender, said I replaced with a2nd hand spare and same thing. He says both prob shot.

The tapping noise is a noisey valve. And loose tappets/lash pads. Better loose than tight. He said valve should be ok but long term look at new head

It is very easy to change the Temperature Gauge, easier than changing the speedometer, which is also fairly easy. But why don't you test it first? See Temperature Gauge, Test/Troubleshooting section.

Problem still persists- noticed that as have internally regulated alternator, stock one removed, but there is no wire looped in the harness. Aren't you supposed to loop the ground pin and one of the others? There are only 4 wires into the 6 bladed plug???

Just find an earth point on the cluster, and run a wire to a clean earth temporarily.

Ok are these meant to be plugged together? Part of the loom into the ignition and indicator branch. Both black wires were taped up seperately but pins connect to for a ground bridge to somewhere I guess

I can find a bridge on diagram
