DIN-mount radios are the same size as the original, but do not have shafts in the front. Instead they attach by the side of the radio.

First, cut out the facia.

You have to cut out the metal around the radio to fit a modern DIN-chassis receiver:

Rectangle cut larger, radio shaft holes now missing

Compare to an uncut dash:

Fabricate a DIN adapter bracket (or modify a commercial one):

Create a bezel, by modifying the stock radio delete plate:

Carefully cut the center out of the delete plate:

Fit the bezel to the radio:

What else would you use the radio delete plate for?

You could use something else I suppose. Got any ideas?

Here in aus hard to find now. Most people binned them im guessing. They are sought for original looking blanking plates. I'm using duct tape, same color and finish as the silver on dash lol.

Simple ugly, light yet effective. Tacho will be mounted in front of most of it do I can see from corner of my eye

On my '72 Coupe, it came with an Astrosonix AM radio. Was going to use the trim like the blanking plate was used by DD, but now considering against doing so if there is some form of sacrilege associated. The radio is stuffed, but is there somebody out there who thinks cutting that part up to install a modern head unit would be an unpardonable sin?

Open to suggestions

I would do cut one up. As long as you are using it to improve you Datsun, how can it be wrong?

You can also buy a modern stereo units brand new with shaft fitment. I think Panasonic makes one single model, the others are specialty brands. These fit in the stock 1200 sheet metal, no cutting required. http://www.crutchfield.com/m_362950/Classic-Car.html
