Track and rallye first gear is hardly needed but for street where most boxes end up its not for a light datsun but for a heavy celica. However I thinnk Simon you use the 2.9 first which is an awesome ratio to have.

71 series box sloppy fix also someone mentioned they used soft brass bushes?
Hard nylon sounds good specially for those rare and great 2.9 first 260z boxes.

T50 weigh is around 32kg as rallycar weighed it some years ago mine weighed 34kg
with dellow kit installed while 71 series stumpy box is 35kg and much stronger
with 3.25 first gear.

To change first gear on t50 its about 800-900 dollars from what Ive read.

I ran the T50 in my track car and the low 1st didn't bother me a bit
I mean really... how often do you actually need to use first gear anyway unless your stop start in peak hour ?

Regarding the poridge bowl shifters on the 71b boxes.

I fitted some new shifter bushes (bottom and sides) i recieved from a member in WA. I think they were genuine. It improved the shift a little bit but still not good.

Just before the weekends racing i machined up some new ones out of hard nylon. The shift now is great and free from any slop.
I dont want people to be put off the datsun boxes because of the shifter, They can be fixed.

Discussed a zillion times the SilllyKa T50 Hence conversions are always 4 sale.
First gear runs out faster than elevator victims of Pavarotti passing gas.

3.25, 2.9 first is where its at starting with most 71 nissan boxes, followed by T5 & then steel case w50. T50 in a light car & big hp only good starting in 2nd.

The cheapest option for a good ratio box weve found with another member is an A series auto bellhousing with 5mm steel tapped and bolted to an S-10 WC T5 box. Front input shaft is removable and T5 would never break. Would prefer a smaller RWD box with separate bellhousing, longer input shafts that can be easily machined to suit and lightweight with good ratios is a big challenge and rare.

id say the t50 celica box seems to be the one that most people use if they need a more stronger gearbox, bit expensive for the dellow kit and #OOPS# though

sequential kit for the 71 series! now that I gotta see ;))

Just wondering Don If I got a T5 and A series Bellhousing
could you guys make the plate between the two?

I wouldnt be able to align it properly.

It would need to be a 5mm steel plate then I will have to get the input shaft machined and the auto bellhousing modded for a hydraulic throw-out bearing slave eg by tilton
http://www.americanmuscle.com/ram-throwoutbearing-05gt.htm

Here is a T5 unit- 160usd !!!

Link below is for a Tremec setup in a ford but would be the same in an auto bell on the T5 box

The good part of the bell housing is that it would be machined to suit the large bore 1st 2nd rod, if you use an earlier box you fit a du bush and then it suits the other type. This means that you can use any 71 series box except the early 240Z type. Any stumpy or 240K box, close ratio 260Z box or even an option 1 box from nismo if you're lucky. You don't need to go to a later double synchro 71C box but if you want you can. That's the beauty of the front case replacement. It is just like using a stumpy for your CA conversion... except it's your A series.

Anyway, it's a pipe dream unless I can get my boss to agree. And there is no way that I am going to get 20 housings sold on this site. Just being realistic.

Can you get a sequential shifter conversion for the datsun 71 series boxes? I seem to recall a company something like "IKEYA" (and I'm not getting confused with the home furniture construction kits 'ikea" ) - did conversions to sequential shift - I think for the toyota w series, who knows maybe the 71.

Whilst it isn't cheap, I'd probably go for a bellhousing at $1100. SO you could put '1' to the list of the required 20 minimum :) . If I factor in what a decent tig welder is going to cost me, it'll be cheaper to go the bellhousing (but I guess then I won't have a tig for other stuff!)
