great project!! i have this engine in my cube an while not amazing performance it still holds it own in a cube it would be more than adequate for some laughs in a datsun 1000 or 1200!!
top effort

Wow what a brillant thread! I love what you are doing trying to have as little modification as possible.

is that sitting there with sump mods or not?

looks perfect size. and no crane needed to get it in there

Well, after a bit of fidgeting, I gutted the 4 speed and mocked it to the engine, I removed the offending bolts and sat the block with box into the thou engine bay, bolted the gearbox mount up and then sat the head and rocker cover on.

I have the crank girdle sitting on a 16mm piece of MDF to get a rough height. With the bonnet on, the oil cap clears the ribbing and at the front has a clear 20mm of breathing space It does sit a bit close to the firewall though for the water outlet at the rear.

So, I guess the end result is, Yes. The CR14DE is a viable conversion. There are some things that will need sorting out but at the moment I am thinking of the GC13DE. I want to use something that doesnt need sump modifications.
