They are getting on now but the gt doesn't have hi low. Just a 5 speed.

Mine got expensive with repairs. Costs about 2k to get timing belt and head gaskets done usually need to do water pumps at same time. Also boxes are but fragile if you mod them like wrx.
There's better cars for the $ now imho. They are getting too old. Xt but better but same belt issues and some have piston issues with 2.5lt

Look for something with a timing chain is,my advice.

all true above, they are a money pit. If after a 4wd get a stagea with RB motor or GTIr all cheap now.

We have a Forester. I reckon if the previous owner just replaced the belt, head gaskets and all engine seals, it will be reliable enough. The full-time AWD with LSD is excellent.

Just spent $2000 on my Forester but well worth it, its a very tough car.
If it can handle my wife's driving it can handle anything.

Timing belts are expensive, but still only paid $700 (complete major service) to replace mine. I've found that general servicing is cheap, but some parts can get up there.

If you are after one check for kays and logbook servicing. Belts go every 100 000k, so if you find one that's done 150 with up to date logbooks you won't have to worry about the expensive stuff for ages.
