haha L series an easy fit....yeah thats a good one

they look like a really nice fit once they are in but trust me, a CA is so much easier to fit in than an L series. especially an L20b

any manual nissan box that fits a CA can also fit an L series. nissan didnt really change the gearbox design a whole heap so bellhousings are interchangable between them with very little modification

if you want to do it properly. find a D21 navara 5 speed. they are a 71C like an S13 gearbox. so just as strong as the standard silvia and R32 and 300zx and so on gearbox, but they are the shortest of those boxes. dont know the exact length but not a whole heap longer than an R30 box

any 71 series box will be a tight fit in a standard manual tunnel, so pretty much any box that came on anything from an L series through to an RB, they are all the same design of box

ive run larger tunnels in both my 1200s and both had plenty of room for the standard heater box to fit. pretty sure the maddat one is just a crap shape. in my wagon with the CA and an RB30 box there is heaps of room around the top of the box and the heater also has plenty of room

so i'd go for the newest 71 series box you can find regardless of whether its a CA or an L series, or a SR RB VG Z.
there are 3 different lengths that i know of in the 71C
D21 navara being the shortest
R31 skyline, R32 skyline and VL commodore in the middle
and Silvias, R31 pintaras being the longest
dont know where the z31 300zx and non turbo z32 would be

get one of them and you can get a bellhousing to fit pretty much any of the bigger engines nissan made from the 70s through to the early 90s

Thanks for the great info, anyone got advise on a gbox behind the L20b if I go that way? Does a 260z box fit?

easy fit, only if you notch x member to make it sit low and not hitt bonnet usually for l series, and dont want to fit engine and gbox together in one go, unless you like to drop it all out from underneath x members and all.

in all honesty get an auto or 120y tunnel. its a pain to try with a stock tunnel.

i wish i went with the longer g box now- cheaper easier ans with a ca, get them cheap as chips. just need to move hand brake further back.

stumpy will be fine with either ca or l series. more likely the L series will lunch it with all the stroker low down torque . sounds like you will be driving it hard.

check the wiki. its all in there.

Looking at running a CA18DET in a 1200 ute, power wise will be running fairly standard for awhile but I do have plans to get it above the 300hp mark eventually.

It will be mounted using a copy of the maddat fitting kit, my attraction to the r30 box is that I don't need to mod the tunnel and can then keep the std heater box.

The other engine setup I was thinking is a complete opposite to the ca, saw a 1200 fitted with a worked L20b stroked to a 2.4 with a Z crank, this thing was a animal and was fairly easy fit

Box is strong enough for a 6cyl l series and Seidel engines. All depends how much power and how you drive it. Don't forget they are pushing 20+ years of abuse by now.

As for tunnel in an auto tunnel should be fine but manual people say needs massaging but I have a stanza tunnel in mine and still tight to get box out. Need to lift front of engine to get rear of engine down for enough angle to drop it out.

All depends how its mounted too.

What engine you running and what's your car now

Has anyone had any experience with the R30 stumpy box into a 1200 without mods to the tunnel? I have heard mixed things like its a extremely tight fit and that the box itself are not very strong.
