DD, just recently learned Ay12 hemi was made to make more hp for the A series
to make the heavier cherries competitive and in turn surprisingly outhandled
1200s allowing drivers to choose more aggressive lines.

The beauty of the Ka head is its not complex like the sr20ve head
and with revvs can be a potent alternative for the L series crowd.
Yet if an 8v L head has the right work its also an awesome setup
well balanced for L20b torque monster capable bottom ends.

Datsun guys are spoilt for choices, we prob have more choices
for engine conversions and hybrids for any make.
Even the A series Mini guys have KAAD and BMW head options
while the Datto A and L have like 4 or 5 together!


EDIT/UPDATE- The KA24DE headed L series in Perth 1600 made 284hp
thats campaigned in racing reliably so thats 142hp per litre.

The Sr16VE is only shy of 0.05hp from the honda and what Greek
and other tuners have done was just use more agressive maps with
vvl at 4800 intake and 5400 exhaust for 126-128hp per litre.
No opening up engine or adding anything but code and durability
is better on the VE Nissans from factory.

In 2ltr class in Soufrika the NIssan SR20Ve is beating all other 2ltr engines

The one I liked was the L18 because few realise that with minimal work and 40 thou under mains a Cosworth BDA crank drops into an L series giving you the ultimate bottom end upgrade,then put a KA head on top and you have a very tough engine.

I still wonder if the AY was ever good enough as stated in the literature as Renault Gordini 807 engines in the A110 where much better units yet only managed 248bhp in sprint tune.

What about Datsun A12 engine with AY semi-hemi head?
* 123 hp/liter at debut
* 169 hp/liter after development

So a 126 hp/liter with 16-valve head is easy to do. The only "trick" is to make it last a long time.

The KA is certainly overlooked in Oz but maybe no longer.

Nick- supersprints are not endurance events but I gather that engine
should have no problems making that power reliably. Theres certainly
more to come from it to think the 12 valve ka24e donk in the states
where supposedly making 340hp and more. Capacity helps but its hard
to not be confident the KAL18DE (2 liter) another member is building
will see 10,000 rpm shifts and perhaps make around 126+bhp per litre.

The other engine that has potential is the QR25DE with SR20De crank
there are kits offered by some peeps in the states and works out to
be lighter with more capacity and longer rods than stroker sr22de.
QR23De or QR23DD is certainly another interesting beast but for non
pollution heritage looks KA-L-DE looks the goods.

Engines around 300hp/liter, naturally aspirated. So 126hp/liter can easily be done, and if done well can last a while.

I was told to go with the KA24DE when I was looking to fit a Z24 into my car. Maybe I should have listened. The aftermarket performance parts for the KA are abundant. There's nothing out there for the Z motor. I'm pretty sure I'll be happy with this last motor swap. The KA and 720 5 speeds fits perfectly.

Thats a nice list of super cars. Bet they run all day and night too. How reliable would a 290hp 2.3L motor be ?? Or any NA motor producing 126 hp/L ??

The 997 GT3 RS 3.8 hits 116.38 wheel horsepower per liter.
The 500hp 997 GT3 RS 4.0 hits 114.25 wheel horsepower per liter.
The F430 Scuderia is at 106 wheel per liter.
553hp Lexus LFA v10 is 115.1 per liter
562hp 458 ferrari italia is 124.5hp per liter
562hp Lamborghini lp570-4 superleggera V10 is 108hp per liter

Give credit where its due...


bugatti veyron though not NA is at 125hp per liter.Forced induction cars can surpass this hp per liters.But this is about NA motors.

It's why the KA24 is the most popular swap in USA. Big displacement, high-flow 16-valve head -- and dirt cheap. Even the truck version is 40% more powerful than L20B and fits shorty transmission from the 720 (same length as 1200 gearbox).
